[EXCLUSIVE] Deer skull dice box

Hi! Happy Friday!!

Release day is here, and I'm so excited! The DeerSkull dice box comes in a bundle of files which includes several versions.

On the drive you’ll find several folders, it is important that you print the top and the bottom from the same folder so they patch perfectly! The following versions are:

Dice box with notched rim

Dice box 3x5 Magnets

Bowl with notched rim

Bowl 3x5 Magnets

Experimental version with a print in place latch

Placing Magnets:

I bought the magnets from Amazon.ca, they work very well and fit perfectly! Here is the direct link (this is not an affiliated link)

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B09CNJ4GN8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are strong enough that you can flip the box upside down. I am sure other brands will also work!

I used UV Resin to place the magnets in. This resulted in a very clean finish and it holds really well, but you can use any type of glue strong enough to hold the magnets in their place. When adding the glue please make sure that you scrape any extra glue that might have got outside the magnet hole. If any glue is left outside the hole this will prevent the top from being flush with the bottom. I would use a card or some other tool and scrape over the magnet hole to make sure it is flush. Very little amount is needed to seal the magnet in its hole.

Printing recommendations:

When printing these and especially when printing the magnet versions you will need to make sure your tolerances are tuned in, as the holes were made to be snug to the magnet so there is not constant pulling making it easy for the magnets to dislodge from their place. They will allow for some tolerance variation but not a lot.

If you are unsure you can print the test prints first to make sure things will fit properly, this way you will see if you need to scale the model up before committing to the full print.

The tops are made to not need supports. However I recommend slowing the print down so the hollow part is able to print properly. Printing the top too fast will cause layers to not have enough time to stick onto the pervious layer and create sag.

The print in place latch works great but is highly depended on filament and layer adhesion. During testing some of the latches broke and some were very stable! By design the latch has to be thin in order to allow it a little bit of flex to pop into its groove. Applying a small amount of UV resin, or some other top coat at the base of the latch will help make it stronger, but ultimately will depend on the type of filament you use and how good the layer adhesion is, I don’t recommended using brittle filaments like silk for this version.

Hi! Joined to download this but can't find the link?

Erika

oh man i definitely need to look into airbrushing.

Amanda Shuey

I would love to do tutorials but unfortunately i’m not set up for that right now. The blue one was airbrushed, while the green one i dry brushed on some highlights!

Christine

Have you done a tutorial on how you paint these like this? I’m a visual person and it would be fun just to see it.
