Concept Background + Patreon Update

Hey love, this was a special request and while I finish my other art breakdown on shading skin — lets talk about patreons new Update.

EDITED-

I’m done crying- I spent 8 hours typing, revising and making sure this made since only for me to attempt to publish it, the page freezes , which resulted most of the post getting deleted ( specifically the last 2 and half hours of my work). So this version is what was last saved so I don’t loosing any thing else tonight ( there will be spelling errors, and parts that might not make sense). So to encourage me to finish the project (instead of folding in a corner and never wanting to look at this post/ request ever again ) I will post it for now and find time after finishing packages and other projects to do it all over to again.

And just to vent— This is the side that most artist try not to mention to remain positive. If youre ever feeling like why me— its just the process that will take you where you’re going. It can be so unfair and painful, that you want to quit and may even feel as if you’re stuck. But you got this! This is only a bump in the road that — no I Wish I didnt have to deal with but will most definitively get over.  So as of now I‘ll  continue to cry after posting this and before I start back up and till then, enjoy what I could provide.

Direct video upload

OMG!! I can now post videos ( art breakdowns and timelapse* ) up to 500hrs. Now Im not that good at explaining things and since I am AuAdhd, I also struggle on staying on topic , but as long as you get the point, you didn‘t mind providing me with feedback or asking questions, we can get things started. Also my goal is to teach you technique not to mimic. I want to embrace your ( current) style while providing you with some basic mechanics and insight. All of our art is beautiful and knowing that prior — I hope my art breakdowns are not only educations but, fun and also entertaining.

* Also I have another sub platform (on insta- Its a $1) that I’m testing. So for now, If I do post timelapse videos they will be patreon exclusives. This also includes mini personal projects ( such as mini shorts and possible animations in the future for the HEY CALEB project. Stay tuned for more info and updates.

” Exciting but, Girl what’s next…”

So, with this news I think I’ll do the skin shading request in video form to test out the video feature and get your opinion on my teaching style. However, this art breakdown may have to be a (2) parter for now because, I’m still working on this project. ( Software: Procreate )

S T E P  1 | Layers 1-3 ( Group 1)

Before I start, our focus Isn’t on the characters so, with that being said this breakdown will center around my process. This should be a good explain of how these techniques has helped me along the way— I didn’t use a reference that is public /available( but my imagination). Don’t be alarmed, this still may seem a bit advance to Some but, Im hoping that I can help you improve on looking at a image and simplify its structure to limit your use of references with confident. And no— Please and always use references if you need it, but for stylize work your accuracy isnt necessary.

As we move forward— I hate numbers but, this also might help — we’ll be working in Groups: (3) layers, 3-4 color values, Ill go over the logic and provide two coloring options. You‘re knowledge of perspective ( 3D, and viewpoint), lighting value and depth will be encouraged.

G:3L[ A Group with (3) layers]: We’ll be creating groups —breaking the image down in (3) Sections/layers to get started and through the process.

This concept I wanted, must have perspective, balance and value ( two tones ). Breaking the images background down into (3) sections :

Foreground, center and background

Tips: This is a concept piece— it’s meant to give you an overall idea and shouldn’t be “ PERFECT”. It doesn’t have to be detailed and this should be considered a level (1) styling. This can be an art style on its own.

Layer (1) | background- Section 1

Now my background was also the point ofref. ( view point)— it should be the smallest detail in my overall background. I wanted to create a general shape in the size needed to map out this .

Layer (2) | the center of the image ( middle ground) - Section 2

This layer for me carries the most detail. Which, I will be displaying in value bc my characters are also the over all focus for the illustration. But since this layer is a larger portion to cover and its suppose to act as an overall background, the bigger and bolder the details should do the work.

Layer (3)| Foreground - section 3

this layer depending on the story you‘re telling, will determine what we will be focusing on. For this image I will later apply a blur affect to give separation to the image and mimic the illusion of distance.

S T E P 2  | Layers 4-6 ( Group 2)

Time to zoom in and add more details, to map out your more defined and yet easier identifiable sections in depth. So the same logic for the over all image is perspective but using size in the first section. Group (2)  will consist of value.

So before applying the actual shading/value, we most think about how the value will be mapped out on a smaller scale and what details we want highlighted. Now my framing and view point is displaying us looking up and into the distance and on to another location. So my value pattern is dark-light-dark.

Section(1) — I technically broke down in to 4 values. The darkest value being the background of the castle and the the lightest being the front of the castle and not the fence. The logic behind this is im going dark-light-dark ,and though this is our lighters part of the overall background, you still want separation. I also want the castle to be one  of the focus points for the over all image.

Sections (2) - is where ill display the most detail and our perspective affect you’re looking for. The Sectioning and details down on this layer, should start with basic value mapping.

Showing in the notes above — I wanted  break down this section. Using basic shapes like a silo and cans, I was able to broke down the walls in smaller sections to map out certain details needed.

Section 3 + gray areas — As mention above, a gray is that smaller detail combing each section of the image. You want to treat the gray area as if its apart of the current ( main 3) sections youre working on. Then go back and forth inbetween the main (3) sections To adjust the image.

The foreground for this image also has a decent amount of detail in this image.  All affects wont be displayed in this part of the breakdown. But, I wanted the farthest view points in each section of the image to be give off some sort of blurred to create separation. I also wanted  the foreground to be another element highlighted  for the overall image.

Group 3 | coloring and mini rendering

Okay, this group will need your knowledge of light and shading to. My goal is to know add as much detail without Over doing the over all image be …..
