/298b/ Working For Freedom ft. Alex Gourevitch

On shared-labour socialism.

[Patreon Exclusive]

We continue our discussion, looking at what is behind "bullshit jobs" in the global North and the absence of jobs in the global South; debate whether "shared-labour socialism" would involve commune living; and try to unpick the trickiest aspect of all this: how to distribute the work that is necessary, requires specialisation, and which is unpleasant – for example, mining.

Great interview, love Gourevitch’s take on labour republicanism. Somewhat unrelated - maybe tangentially related - but I wish you guys would do a proper episode on the rise of the logistics industry and the potential power of workers in that sector sooner or later. I could be wrong but I believe Amazon recently overtook Walmart as the leading employer the US. I think this warrants some serious discussion especially as it challenges the notion that workers in developed capitalist countries have become predominantly PMC-ified office workers.

Really great discussion. I especially appreciate Gourevitch problematizing efficiency. Would love to hear more discussions that take seriously problems related to consumption, luxury, and waste.
