/353/ Bunga Sells Out ft. Jason Myles

On music, pop culture, and the politics of the spectacle.

Musician, host of This is Revolution and Sublation columnist, Jason Myles joins us to talk about how every podcast is a failed band, if pop music is dead, and whether the contemporary left is a lifestyle brand feeding into the all-encompassing politics of the spectacle. We also discuss the music of De La Soul and the role of what Jason calls “underclass ideology” in contemporary America. Finally, we reflect on selling out: it used to be a cardinal sin as recently as 25 years ago, but now, if you don't sell out, you're failing. Why?

I'm still angry, so I'll keep going. That band in particular made a killing selling 'end white supremacy' merch during the BLM era. If it's not grifting when you have 15/16 white great-great-grandparents, never lived in New Zealand but calling yourself a Maori and selling that kind of merch and getting positive write ups in the Guardian for being stunning and brave, what do you call it? That is perhaps one of the more obscure examples but there are many more obvious examples you could have used to push back. You sold out on this one George. I hope you get a key bump in the toilet at Catherine's house for your trouble wtf

This was punishing. Though it must suck being an unsuccessful black musician when there are woeful bands like Divide and Dissolve making a living out of pretending to be indigenous. To say there are no grifters is just a crazy thing to say and frankly I lost respect for you George (you're my favourite) for going along with it. Just pathetic entry level record store guy discourse. Hope it works out Jason! Wish I could get a dollar back for this episode...

somehow the erudition used to discuss the Milli Vanilli issue reminded me of the editorial history of Liber de Causis, same mess with the "author", although far more successful in the centuries than Milli V. Also, you should do a show with Steve Albini.
