/379/ Sexy Pictures of Taylor Swift (Not Brexit)

On taking control.

The Netherlands has elected an anti-EU rightist, but he won't take the Netherlands out of the European Union. Britain left the EU, but net migration to the UK has soared to its highest levels. What's going on?

In this special episode, Alex treats Phil and George as interview guests and grills them over their book, Taking Control: Sovereignty and Democracy after Brexit. We discuss:

Revisiting this one, Phil sounds so blinkered and idealistic about Brexit and it’s “achievements” using language he would absolutely scoff at if it was about any other country’s political decisions. I’m remembering how dismissive he was of Chile’s new constitution movement when it failed to be enacted. Terminal UK brain diagnosis I’m afraid :/

I follow this podcast avidly, as it brings great insight and I appreciate the open and robust way it holds up ideas to scrutiny. But I do feel that Brexit, as it was conducted, would always be a disaster. The post-Brexit vision had no sense of how the UK would go alone into the world. No new ideas whatsoever. Just Farage and the like posturing about the revival of some older swashbuckling free trade UK. Phil and George might say that Brexit puts sovereignty in the back pocket. Currently not much use but it has been done and, at some future moment, it can be activated to continue the rebuild of UK sovereignty. That is a very long bow.
