This one takes place a year after Patch Job and is about how Song went from Mansa’s casual boyfriend to his courtesan! So they’ve been seeing each other for about a year now.

Edit: Let’s talk courtesans during this time period!
Many people considered courtesans to be at the top of the sex worker ladder. They were paid to keep the company of wealthy upperclass men. However many times it really was much more than just sex. These were usually two people that chose to be together in a time when marriage was a business transaction. Physical attraction was a driving force behind the couplings, but so is the case in most modern relationships. There were often contracts drawn up between the two parties in something akin to marriage, and financial settlements were made for the courtesan to keep up a lifestyle they grew accustomed to should they ever terminate the relationship (think nuptials!). AND one of the coolest things in my opinion is that many upperclass women who did not want the social restrictions of marriage would become courtesans to keep up their lifestyle, and still remain unattached! If you were a courtesan you didn’t need to worry about the incredibly taxing job of producing heirs, what a bonus! Some women also sought out this profession because in the end it could lead to marriage, and I imagine it would be one of the few marriages for companionship during the time period, especially since you would have essentially had to opportunity to “date” your partner for years when many other women only got to meet their husbands a handful of times before matrimony. There were of course downsides to being a courtesan during this time period but basically your job is to be somebody’s partner! Which is where we will leave the lesson for now!

2021-04-23 06:49:25 +0000 UTCYeah, linen is possible - actual historical method of making fairly stretchy, form-fitting fabric (useful for hose, too) is to use fine thread on the loom and do a bias-weave. Or if someone *really* loves you (or you're rich!) you can take that same fine thread and knit things on ridiculously small needles - though wool is actually more likely for both. (Gee, look, Ma, all those years spent costuming re-enactors is paying off!)

Or are those... one and the same?? The speech bubble colors are the same though. Gah, that comment about his thoughts "having a voice of their own" has been eating away at me since it was posted and is what got me hooked on this story, especially with the way Song asked it to "please stop." I'm so so so curious about it. I'm drinking up all content of this story like it's oasis water and I was just wandering in the desert for a week.

I understand that Song only visits Mansa, while he lives somewhere else, and perhaps doesn't have enough money for the rent - or for food - or whatever he needs. I assume that if a lover becomes a courtesan, it means that they are being KEPT by their patron (or lover, or whatever it is called)? Meaning the patron pays their rent or is responsible for their housing and everything? If so, it would be a much better arrangement for Song to not have to worry about money, although perhaps his pride wouldn't allow it?

2021-04-22 17:35:46 +0000 UTCI think this also relates to the word "heir" itself. You would have "legitimate heirs" and, for lack of a better word (which I DESPISE), "bastards". Both are children of whoever we are talking about, yes, but one has claims over assets and status while the other one does not. So the child in Whiteley's scenario that is given away, would not "qualify" as an heir.

Courtesans could keep the children that they had but many times if they did get pregnant they would opt to give the child away or terminate the pregnancy. A luxury that a man’s wife likely would not have since the marriage was mainly for the purpose of children.

Or is it okay for them to have the man use a condom, which a wife probably can't do? (A dear friend wrote a great book about 19thC courtesans called Fanfare of Strumpets -- sadly out of print-- and I don't recall any of them having children, though they may have shuffled them off.)
