Infernals can use small bits of magic, though nothing substantial. It used to be something they could do on a larger scale but there hasn’t been a need in years so training has fallen by the wayside. They can however hex small items that are sold to humans in a sort of black market setting. Hexed items include things like medication, tonics, and beauty products. It can make the user feel good, reduce pain, even cause infatuation depending on the specific hex. It has the same affect on infernals but there’s low to no risk of addiction, humans are not so lucky. This has caused a recent divide between infernals and humans since the result has been similar to the introduction of opium in the 1800s. Lots of humans see it as infernals trying to grab power, where as the lower class infernals who sell it are mainly doing this to make bits of money the only way they can.
All this to say, Song is not hexed despite his statement, he’s just on a strong painkiller! He’s a clean and sober boy, he knows what damage it can do 👀

2021-04-03 17:27:39 +0000 UTCThe technology is the same as the Regency or Victorian era, much like physical survival skills were falling by the wayside in favor of a cushy life during this time magic was as well. Like being able to 300 pounds, it takes a lot of effort and the payoff often isn’t anything more than “I can do that!”. Most infernals would rather sing or take tea than train rigorously every day of their lives just to use a couple spells.

Not just the fact that Song's not an educated scholar, he's an infernal, but then all this mess with "illicit magic". Goodness. Poor babes! This scene is so sweet and pure, though. Comforting. Makes me think an emotional moment is coming!

Women were the original healers, bc since they worked with herbs so much, they knew all their medicinal properties, BUT because they were women, there was no way they could know more than men, thus the whole "you're a witch!" thing began... I'm healing your dumb ass, can you please just pay up instead of throwing me in jail.... (I know I simplified the story A LOT, I just wanted to add on to the parallels theme)

2021-04-02 11:33:51 +0000 UTCoh, thank you for a detailed explanation, and with parallels with our reality it is easier to understand just the level of divide, prejudice and inequality in their society 😔❤️ have Song or Mansa himself known someone who struggled with addiction and suffered the consequences? 👀 the composition of this panel is *chef's kiss* 😍 Song sure looks much better now, so comfortable and at ease, all carefully patched and bandaged, Mansa did a great job there, big thanks to him ❤️ wonder if Mansa will return to asking about who did this or has some new questions 🤔
