(And for so many other reasons you might miss them, but Song is so young.) So glad this is a flashback, so we know he gets out and is loved.

2021-06-16 12:00:33 +0000 UTCAt this point Song is still living alone in the place the ex set him up with (though he is running low on money), he talks with Harmony but hardly has contact with his parents (he’s a little ashamed he was so taken advantage of and doesn’t know how to reach back out again). Mansa knows Harmony well by now, just not Song’s mother or father. Song only stays with Mansa in the boarding house when he wants to. Later when they have a house together they both technically live there. (And don’t worry, Mansa will meet mommy and daddy Xarrut really soon!)

I live with a misogynist, homophobic a*hole who I basically try not cross words with because it always ends in an argument, so if I see a way out, I'd take it, and probably be blinded to red flags in the process. That's sorta how I see Song's train of thought.

Song is saying his family might have an issue with his "choices", so his partner provided a safe place for him to be himself. I know it's gonna end badly, but from the POV of Song in that place and time, I'm not sure I would have recognized the danger either....

I don’t want to stigmatize being queer in this world (because I don’t want to write anything heteronormative, which also brings up a lot of injustices for women and gender roles in the 1800s) so for world building sake gender and orientation are not judged here, but relationships between infernals and humans are. Certainly not prosecuted but definitely looked at with a careful eye. Even if Song doesn’t think his parents will react poorly he’s still worried worried about being judged.
