I mentioned this in the comments before but if you feel like you see yourself in any of these characters I would LOVE to talk to you! I want to make sure I do these characters justice so if you’re comfortable just send me a message. None of the information you tell me will ever ever be shared, I promise! We already know judges are expected to have partners, and generally couple up with celestial scholars. It'd make sense he'd want a scholar who'd be understanding and discrete about his background, and in turn Etty would get financial support without the traditional expectations that other judges would put on her. She'd be a great human beard.

I look for excuses and frankly sometimes there are none. It was telling that he was worried about Song “embarrassing” Mansa. It has to be incredibly soul twisting to see half of yourself as an embarrassment

So what Etty’s doing with Song is technically alright because Song doesn’t know any of the spells himself, he just conjures when Etsy sings. But Etty teaching Thomas would be very risky.
