New Lariat

I will go into this in The Courtesan but for those of you that are new! When an infernal is in a committed relationship they will wear a lariat around their left horn. They do not give each other this jewelry! It’s important that the infernal make the decision autonomously, unlike old fashioned marriage proposals where one person would decide to marriage was the right choice for both parties. There’s not really a step above this for devils, marriage is a very human thing - part of the reason Song is so afraid of it!
So here Vonya is wearing a lariat and (even though you can’t see it) Harmony is not. She’s not ready, but she loves that Vonya is committed to her and I imagine she takes that step very soon!

2021-08-11 23:32:09 +0000 UTCI just had a thought, and it's totally ok if you don't want to give this away, but in the art after Mansa and Song get back together, is Mansa wearing the ring around his neck as his version of the horn lariat? I understand he was wearing it for sentimental reasons while they were apart, but the idea he wears it after as a sign of devotion and acceptance of Song's culture makes me all fuzzy inside.

After all it is a decision made by one member and doesn’t reflect their position. But I can definitely see it ending a relationship if it’s done too soon!

It really shows how they place importance on autonomy 💜 I'm curious what would happen if someone starts wearing a lariat but it makes their partner uncomfortable? Like if they feel that person is moving too fast (😇😉), or if it's a jerk using it to show possessiveness?

I love the idea that they choose to wear lariats when they’re ready to commit and while Mansa was trying to show Song he was committed, sweet soul that he is, I can see why the comments say it gives his proposal a different impact. Harmony and Vonya are just lovely together.

2021-06-02 00:34:41 +0000 UTCSo absolutely none of this comes up in the story but for some reason I have the answers to these 😂 They’d been together about three years before Vonya bought his lariat, and together four years when Harmony bought hers. And Vonya was Tonya when they first met and his pronouns were she/her. About a year into dating he came out. One other thing that nobody asked for? I don’t have a firm handle on when anybody’s voice would be, but I KNOW Vonya would sound kind of like Lauren Ash.

And I LOVE the additional info on the traditions around the lariat! (And yeah that DEFINITELY adds another layer to why Song freaks out after the proposal 😭 Poor darling. Also it makes me wonder how/if The Ex might have used either or both against him...)

Marriage is sorta final, like you are in or out, no grey area and that can be overwhelming to some. This sort of commitment can demostrate the love they feel towards each other within their own confort levels. I'm SO here for this 👏👏👏
