Also yesterday we had a very engaging discussion happening in the comments! That was wonderful to read but please remember to be kind to one another. As it was pointed out, Song was triggered and did make some mistakes. Yes he could have gone to Mansa or Etty but the last thing he was doing was thinking clearly. That doesn’t make it right, but it also doesn’t mean he intended to hurt Mansa. In fact! In the next few pages Mansa is going to make some big mistakes, that will hurt Song. He’s under a great deal of stress, but again, it doesn’t make it right. These characters are extremely imperfect and they do not have the full sides of one another’s stories! The beauty (and heartache) of these flashbacks is that they are setting up why characters act they way they do in the main story, meaning nobody has had a chance to grow and/or face their demons yet.
All this to say when you are commenting please be as empathetic with each other as you can! There are others in the chat that have actually experienced the trauma that Song and Mansa are going through and their feelings and safety come first 💕

But it's beautiful to see them fight and move forward alongside all their flaws. The truth is you don't have to fix all your flaws to be worthy of love

I don't wanna see perfect characters or flawed characters pretending to be perfect. I wanna see characters I can relate to who have problems and fuck up sometimes. But they also can do good things sometimes too and that balance I feel really makes them come alive ❤ lol I didn't mean to write a whole essay but yeah. I love these boys and all the other characters in this story.

2021-09-20 11:37:40 +0000 UTCAs Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett expressed so beautifully in Good Omens, people experience it all, the good and the bad churning about inside us, and we have to deal with others without knowing what they’ve been through in turn. You’ve captured that beautifully, Whiteley, with your own remarkable characters! One of the great tragedies in my family is that my grandfather had a very painful boyhood and never learned to properly process and grow from his hurt. We the readers can take comfort in the fact that Mansa and Song with both grow. They put in that work because they love each other. I hope for myself that I’m always willing to do the same, and grow from the many mistakes I make. ♥️

I wouldn't want to invalidate anyone's feelings but I can't imagine how anyone could blame Song for his actions or think he had any bad intentions. He deserves so much better than what he's been given and part of me is looking forward to seeing him take off and take the time to find himself.

2021-09-20 11:20:59 +0000 UTCoh darling... 😔🥺 thank you, Whiteley, for writing this caption summarizing yesterday's discussion, it really is important for everyone of us to understand ❤️ reaction on trauma is not something easily regulated internally, these reactions may be illogical when looked at from outside, especially without special professional help which Song, I guess, never ever had a chance of having, and this reaction does not make him bad while not making him good either, bc life is never as simple as *being 100% good* or "being 100% bad*, sometimes it's just "being a person*, and we should be empathetic to this ❤️ they both handled and will continue to handle their ends of an awful situation as it was and will be in their ability at the moment, and no one is ever perfect 😔💔

I just keep reminding myself that they DO survive this as a couple and they will have as much of each other’s stories as they’re able to share.
