Thomas was Song’s friend who had escaped the pressures of a racist, dictating family and begun performing with Song instead of joining the army to seek approval (though Song did not know about his mother). Meanwhile Etty had never left the rigid cult she was raised in and became one of Mansa’s suitors, neither was interested in the other and instead became good friends. Etty and Thomas’ rolls in the story were similar though, with Thomas asking Etty for help controlling his magic, and their friendship still leading to beliefs being questioned and comfort zones being pushed by their relationship.
Ultimately I did change it because it would have been difficult to hide Thomas’ heritage, and Etty was too strong of a personality to be believably puppeted by the other scholars. It just wasn’t them in the end. Their relationships to Song and Mansa changed drastically, but their friendship with each other didn’t!
