Thank you all for much for your kind words yesterday! I’m really happy you’re enjoying this comic! We are coming to a close in probably about a month on Old Habits and then I’ll need help decided what to draw next! Either a short comic of what directly lead up to the proposal or Mansa and Song’s first meeting!

2021-12-03 13:06:18 +0000 UTCI’m planning on doing a fairly long flashback of just Elon’s life in the actual story itself, but I’d be happy to talk about it! Elon was very much in love with Song when they met. He was having other infernals run hexes for him and sleeping with a few but Song was very bold and was popular with humans (not in a romantic way, popular because of the conjuring performances he did with Etty). But “love” for Elon was more about possession obviously. Maybe because Elon was a little jealous of Song’s popularity with humans too. He was not allowed to love infernals, and suddenly here comes this hot young thing that humans in power are lining up to see conjure. Elon wouldn’t see it as fair that others could watch this, enjoy it, essential use Song for entertainment, and leave without ever thinking about Song again, where as all he wanted to do was be with an infernal and he wasn’t allowed. But instead of getting upset with the system of oppression (like Mansa) he would get mad at infernals like Song for allowing themselves to be used like that. When Song asked to be his courtesan he realized that he did in fact want a real relationship with an infernal (which the scholars would not allow). He definitely took that out on Song until Song couldn’t take it anymore and left. CW for toxic relationship/mental and emotional abuse: As for Song he has always liked humans and had flirted on many occasions, which usually got him kicked down (sometimes literally). Elon was the first human to show any interest in him AND he was a celestial scholar, which was extremely validating for Song. Plus Elon lovebombed a lot, and because Song was so young he didn’t see that as a red flag. He let Elon buy him jewelry and clothes and even rent him a house, which he realized too late was to isolate him. Suddenly he didn’t see his parents or Harmony, he didn’t preform with Etty, everything he did revolves around Elon. He must have seen giving up all other relationships as true devotion/love, while also feeling just utter despair because he was so alone. He also thought that if he was something real to Elon that he would feel whole again. He asked Elon to be his courtesan because Elon had become his entire world. When he was rejected and Elon started treating him worse of course he assumed it was his fault, I mean Elon had only ever given him gifts, and provided for him, and loved him, so he (Song) must be the problem. He found out about the other infernals Elon was with but still stayed because he felt like he had nothing else by that point - he’d pushed his loved ones away and assumed they wouldn’t want him back now. He let the relationship continue until he saw Elon hit Georgie. Song packed up and went straight to Harmony after that! They’re very oil and water now because Song has forced himself to become oil. He knows what Elon can do, and more importantly he knows if he’s not careful and goes along with this charm that he’ll get hurt again, only this time he’ll drag Mansa down along with him.

Whiteley, I have a question today, and maybe you want to wait until future comics and that’s fine of course! Just curious: what drew Song to Elon in the first place? Did Elon turn on a certain charm that wasn’t his normal self? In these scenes, they’re very much oil and water, but you’ve done an awesome job of showing such realistic gaslighting that I’m thinking the Elon that Song met isn’t really him. Thank you for that, and I’m sorry you’ve experienced it yourself. 😞💚
