I’m not sure if anyone else gets this, but what’s happening to Mansa right now used to happened to me around my cis friends all the time. Whenever I made a big decision or was conflicted about something there was always this assumption that it had to do with my sexuality, like my entire personality revolved around the gender of a partner I didn’t even have. (Moving to Vermont? That’s good because they’re really liberal up there. Bought a subaru? That’s perfect, other queer people will be able to tell! It was never mean spirited but it was exhausting, I’m really glad that’s not my crowd anymore.) So that’s mostly what Thomas is implying asking this life decision had to do with infernals.
Also… I just think that devils would be on Thomas’ mind constantly. Especially right now in this bar where his safety might depend on him passing.

I’ve heard conversation along these same lines about the Black Lives Matter movement - “they’re so much better off than they were, so what’s the problem?” It’s like this reassurance of complacency that people (mainly white) tell themselves.

Subaru’s are like my state’s official car!

They say we are liberal country, etc, etc. But if you kiss your partner on the street you can be arrested. If you step out of the closet you can lose your job or be hurt by some jerks. And I’m glad your friend crowd is better now. I find Thomas’s reaction interesting, both in the nature of his attempt to protect himself and the social tendency of those in power to trivialise the struggles of those without power. The art is wonderful, as always. 😘
