If you haven't heard yet, the first book of my upcoming series through Penguin Random House is arriving this October (preorder here). And the book deal is a fantastic thing for a lot of reasons.
First, it's going to give you a beautiful hardcover, wonderfully-illustrated version of the stories you love, sorted thematically for reference and enjoyment.
Second, it's going to be a great gift idea for the people in your life who love these kinds of stories but don't/can't listen to podcasts. For someone who is a lover of books, these beautiful volumes are going to be a great way for you to introduce them to Lore.
But the book deal has another outcome that you'll start to notice. You see, when a publisher agrees to print a book, they want to be the only ones doing so. That's how they earn back the cost of making it. Makes sense, right?
So when you hear authors talking about "print rights", it's basically an agreement between the publisher and the author that only that publisher will be releasing that content into the world. No one else.
And that includes me. I know...I wrote this stuff, and it belongs to me. But the book deal gives sole publishing rights to my publisher—and for good reasons. They're insanely good at making beautiful books and marketing them to brand new readers. They are an essential team member for the growth of Lore.
Here's the big takeaway: as of today, PDF transcripts need to vanish from all Patreon reward levels. I know that might take away a lot of the value you see in your membership, and I get that. But I'm working hard on finding new rewards that [1] don't eat up the last bits of my free time, and [2] add an awesome level of value to your membership. I'm working on it.
You support Lore, and I love you for it. Honestly, you are a part of my team, and I wouldn't be here without you. Thank you for your patience and understanding as I transition through this transcript stuff.
Now hold tight...in less than four months, you're going to be able to pick Lore up and hold it in your hands, and it's going to blow you away.

2017-07-16 10:00:57 +0000 UTCI'll be a little sad to lose the transcripts as I have hearing issues and sometimes refer to the transcripts to understand the names of the places and people involved, but I understand why you need to do this. I love your show, I'll still continue to support even after the transcripts are gone. Hopefully your upcoming show will have closed captioning. :)

If you would like to order/purchase a collection of stories from the podcast, I recommend preordering the upcoming hardcover Monstrous Creatures, and the two sequels to follow it in 2018. I understand the frustration at the change in rewards over the last couple of years, and I echo that. I wish I had more time, and more freedom, to offer those things again. But the book series is a step forward, for Lore and for my career. I will continue to strive to deliver content you love, and find new rewards that make the financial support more than worth it. 2017-07-14 15:39:02 +0000 UTCAaron, while you gave a good explanation and I understand why you had to remove the transcripts, this still feels like a cheat. As soon as I read your message, I went to download the old transcripts I hadn't downloaded, but links were gone in a matter of minutes. I'm sure this was to comply with your contract, but I can't help but feel the reward that I was promised was taken away. I originally supported at the $10 level in order to get the book, but I so enjoyed the premium transcripts I continued to support at that level. However, when the premium transcripts went away I downgraded support to the $5 as the difference between those reward levels wasn't enough to incentivize supporting at the Gold level. Now that the transcripts are gone, it feels like there is less of reason to support at this level. I enjoy the Lore Extras, but the transcripts were my favorite reward. I don't blame you for building Lore as a brand, I was intending to purchase the book and I'm looking forward to the TV show. The content you produce is some of the best out there on the net and rivals that of other podcasts with large production crews and larger support bases. All this to say I support and enjoy your work, but please don't forget your supporters and give us a heads up before you have to change things.

2017-07-14 14:57:42 +0000 UTCTo add to this point, Aaron, since you are selling access to the podcast through Patreon essentially, you may want to ensure that the lack of transcripts doesn't violate the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). There is some case law that an online-only business offering services to consumers is required to follow the ADA, and regulations promulgated from the ADA have requirements around captioning and otherwise providing equivalent alternatives for online video and audio.

2017-07-14 14:22:40 +0000 UTCThis sucks. I mean, I understand logically why you had to do this but I'm very sad at the loss of the transcripts. I am only able to enjoy your content because of the transcripts. A friend introduced me to Lore by showing me a couple and I was hooked but I am deaf so the transcripts were not a reward for me but a necessity. Since book publishing is a slow process I will no longer be able to follow Lore as episodes are released but only much later, and that's assuming the book is a collection of the episode transcripts. Congratulations on moving forward and expanding, I'll miss your stories.
