Old Habits (page 79)

Ask me questions about the church and celestial scholars/infernals while Song shows off a very new and vulnerable part of himself to his dear Mansa 💕

Definitely a grey area! There are plenty of people who are like Thomas but they mainly identify with their infernal roots

Whiteley Foster

Is Thomas legally considered a human or an infernal? Or is there simply no existing legal classification for him in a society that assumes that mixing doesn’t/shouldn’t happen? Would it be legal for Thomas to practice conjuring? Or is his existence one of those inconveniently sticky gray areas the church and courts would rather not have to contend with, because of the uncomfortable questions it would raise?

🖤

rippingoffmyface

He looks *worried* to me ... 🥺

Eileen Smithers

Their facial expressions are so vulnerable and it's lovely.

Atelerix

I love that idea!

Samara Lilly (Sandra)

They have to give it willingly through touch!

Whiteley Foster

How do they give their power over to a human? Is it a natural process or something that was discovered by humans and forced on infernals?

Little0cean

O_O!!!

Vala

Or they just haven’t caught him yet 🤔

Whiteley Foster

I love that they're sitting safely in their bedroom for this vulnerable conversation. it's lovely <3

SkyAsimaru

Soooooo does that mean celestial scholar magic is going to be used by law enforcement to trace Song? He's still clearly free by The Proposal... I can't wait to see how this plot unfolds!!

Aurelia

God this is BEAUTIFUL.

Ash S.

I have a feeling that's coming...

Res Judicata

Nor, presumably, Ellie, who has been helping Thomas with the same issue.

Linnea Dodson

Humans became afraid of losing power as more infernals immigrated, but it was more of small laws that just kept piling up. The church had originally viewed infernals as equals, saying that they were very important when it came to performing rituals. However as people became more afraid those religious laws shifted from infernals being equals in a ceremony, to only their magic being important.

Whiteley Foster

Legally!

Whiteley Foster

Infernals are definitely the minority and since they had been mostly nomadic, it wasn’t difficult to twist the religion to suit these needs of the church as more arrived. I actually do have a religion written that explains the origin on infernals and people but I’ll get into that later 😅

Whiteley Foster

Song knows Mansa would NEVER demand he give over his power

EsmeGlass

This is such a beautiful page! All this talk about humans taking away the infernals’ access to their own power/magic makes me so sad (and angry), the poor dears being suppressed and exploited like that. Somehow I hope your main plot will give them back their rights and equality… 🙏💜

Singasongrightnow

I think we need an infernal rebellion stat!!

Lyubi

Was there a big historical event that caused so many restrictions on Infernals?

_Ms_Mayflower

Mansa looks so amazed. 🥺 I think he likes Song new found power. 😊 This page is so beautifull, all the pages are but this lights are stuning ❤️

Dominika Beregi

A select few Infernals are taught how to conjure by the church from a young age, and the high up scholars use them sort of like batteries. They can give this conjured magic to humans through touch, but it only lasts short periods of time (up to an hour but usually less) and they are never allowed to use it themselves. Scholars can use it for pretty much anything (on paper it’s supposed to be for worship purposes, but just like money given to a church it’s not always used properly) or give it to upper law enforcement (like Charles) to keep the peace. Infernals can always make more magic, but using it or having it taken from them is exhausting!

Whiteley Foster

By “have to” does Song mean legally or they physically aren’t able to hold it?

Victoria

oh, this whole system is so f*ed up... 😬 was it long ago that this oppressive system began? was it like humans coming to live where only infernals lived before and ceasing power? 👀

sick_pineapple

Also sorry, other people asked the same while I was typing! 😬

Jem

Wow. Okay. Understanding Song's shock now. This is bloody huge. 🔥 When he says "give their power over to a human", how does he mean? Like... They give over control of it, or...? (Apologies, I'm bad at making sense when it comes to asking questions! 😂)

Jem

All I'm getting from this is that Mansa will be getting powers soon XD

the.kitsuneko

How does an infernal 'give their power over'? Is it like a contract that they can only do things determined by a scholar, or that they are bound to a human who takes responsibility for them?

Cj

How are they able to transfer their power to a human and how does it stay with that human if the infernal was born with it? Isn't it inherently part of the infernal and they are giving part of themself away? O_O!!
