Nerve (page 10)

Charles really does think he’s helping, which may be the worst part of this whole thing!

The Mansa question box is open if you have any!

"We're open minded here, we don't disown family members! We brainwash them 🥳😘"

Blair

OmgWhiteley You're such an ace story teller!

Cj

Whiteley, I need to tell you -- I love your heroes, but I absolutely adore your villains. I can't wait to see more of Charles. I hope there's still hope for him...

CC

I agree. He's a victim of society's pressure too, and he's coping in the best possible way.

CC

I want to slap some sense in him.

CC

fuck yeah 🏳️‍🌈💚

Planetary System

Yeah that’s what I was thinking too!

litlgreenleaf

Huh, trying to get his daughter hitched? Perhaps she also appreciates Infs?

Tamerrae

teamwork! 🫱🏾‍🫲🏿

Neil K.

Oof…very hard page to read today. So many people out there would think that “God” can take away this “temptation”. No Charles, that’s not how attraction works. We’re here to stay, Baby Beard. 🌈

litlgreenleaf

^My theory, too! 😁

litlgreenleaf

The church does! It’s really not too prevalent but it happens occasionally

Whiteley Foster

then I bring the shovel to get rid of the body

Lady Sammy

How prevalent is conversion therapy in Mansa’s region? Was that ever something he feared or is this his first introduction to the possibility? Who runs this conversion therapy? The church?

Glissando365

You’re getting ahead of us but yeah… yeah he was

Whiteley Foster

Something about Charles here makes me think there was once a tiny spark that has been snuffed out. Was he once at least curious about infs and it was stomped out at a young age?

Cj

Ohhh ..... what if his daughter marries an infernal when Bill 58 passes?!?

Eileen Smithers

Plot *twist* ... the daughter is actually that masked group leader out there protecting infernals!

Eileen Smithers

I look forward to that!

Ashfae

These people are the truly evil ones because they know deep down inside they're right. They have some belief that backs them up and generally appear to be good people. They're the kind who volunteer at soup kitchens, but have opinions on trans folk. They give regularly to charities, are nice to the neighbourhood kids and every thinks they're so friendly, then you hear them mention something about "those people". My town's dealing with people like this. They claim they're progressive liberals, but they're gentrifying neighbourhoods and pushing out the poor. They want a homeless shelter, but nowhere near where they live. Any suggestion that a developer build multi-family housing near their expensive homes and they're flooding the city council meetings. They think they're allies supporting marginalized groups when their actions shout something else.

Res Judicata

For all that the idea he's pitching is infuriating, I actually feel a bit sad for Charles. He honestly thinks he's on the side of Good, but he's so misguided that he can't tell which way is Good anymore. I always find it sad when a villain thinks they're doing a good deed, not realizing they are the villain in someone's story and that their deed is actually the opposite of their intentions. I'm definitely not saying he's a "Good Guy, Just Misunderstood", I just think he's a bit of a tragic character. He probably thinks he's doing the right thing by his daughter, as well, by mentioning her (I imagine she mentioned, in passing, that Mansa is handsome, but meant nothing more by it) as a potential courting opportunity, when that may not be the case at all.

DeviousRenegade

As if I didn’t loathe this guy enough. Jesus.

Ash S.

The whole condescending kindness makes it even worse... 😔

Ace Of Tales

Oh this makes my heart hurt 🥺

Midnight-Radio

I haven’t really thought about that but maybe once! That’s probably the only time Song would have gotten up in arms

Whiteley Foster

He’ll get what’s coming to him… but not in the way one might expect 🤔

Whiteley Foster

Of all the repulsive, abhorrent attitudes- please tell me there is some sort of nasty karmic course correction for him?

Sarah H

Well put

Tarek Giver of Cookies

Did any of them ever try sending an infernal? From Mansa's history, it'd seem obvious (at least to some of them) that he'd not accept a human. Did they ever send a more "socially acceptable" infernal than Song? (I adore Song, but politics is not his thing.) Especially after the passed the bill, it'd seem an obviously lost cause.

catididnt

i cannot describe to you the pure, unbridled tsunami waves of hatred violently flooding off of me toward this man. the absolute fucking gall to frame conversion therapy as anything even remotely close to helpful... i know you said mansa doesn't accept the offer (thank every deity there is), but does charles get any kind of karmic justice somewhere down the line for this? because good god, i would pay every last penny i had to see it

Planetary System

i'll help. then we can set him on fire 🔥

Planetary System

I'd credit the writing/drawing (and/or acting) that make the characters interesting more than their motives. They need some depth, and you get some of the different stance here, especially compared to the conversation that just ended (he didn't hold it against Mansa for interrupting that), and here the tilt of Charles' head, the (intended) reassurance in his words. He cares about Mansa, recognizes he's a good person, (believes he's decent enough to date his own kid, which is probably not true of all the students) and really wants to help him. But for all he wants to be helping, he's still prioritizing society's expectations above Mansa's well-being. He's actually being even crueler for presenting it as "better" than disowning, not because disowning is good but it does acknowledge who Mansa is. (Compare him to Elon, who falls into "evil for evil's sake" and plays a much more tradition villain in this story. Neither are trustworthy, both are betraying our heroes (on different levels), both either intended or succeeded in manipulating our heroes. They both are interesting (and threatening) in their own ways.)

catididnt

I want to strangle him.

Neil K.

But is she as intense in the same direction? After all, she reported Song’s attack.

Linnea Dodson

True, but villains who have what they feel to be noble motivations are way more interesting than evil for evil’s sake.

Linnea Dodson

Does he eventually come out to his grandmothers via those letters?

Little0cean

Honestly it's sadder that he thinks he's helping

Tarek Giver of Cookies

The things we do for love 😂❤️

JillianVolts

Maybe in his mid teens he went on a few courtings but that’s all. He’s known he liked infernals since he was a preteen and had a crush on the house keepers daughter but she was never interested in him

Whiteley Foster

I can't remember if this was discussed before but has Mansa tried dating humans? How did he find out he was into infernals?

Kyle Rose

oh, you needn't worry, we won't just let you be yourself, we will pay those people to torture you and make you to our liking, no money from your side needed, DAMN, I'M, MY BLOOD IS BOILING WITH HOW CALM AND *CARING* HE SOUNDS 😤

sick_pineapple

No they didn’t disown him, they just have limited contact because Mansa doesn’t want them learning about him. He keeps in touch with letters to him grandmothers so they know he’s doing well but that’s it.

Whiteley Foster

Big time, he goes from early to on time 😆

Whiteley Foster

Mansa declines offers that take him out of the house to meet up with someone, but if they come calling he will politely have tea and dismiss them - after all it’s not their fault they were set up like this, many of them wouldn’t even know Mansa already has a partner. Meanwhile Song puts on a brave face. He knows Mansa has to keep up appearances and trusts him implicitly and is not quick to jealousy, he’s more hurt by the knowledge that no one around them respects their relationship.

Whiteley Foster

Yikes 😬 Did Mansa’s parents actually disown him or does Charles just assume that they did? Also just offering up your daughter? I’m sure she would love to have a say in this. Also do Mansa’s parents miss him or contact him at all? Like writing letters. Or do they know they broke their relationship and leave him alone?

Little0cean

Mansa says earlier in the comic that he’s never late… does his relationship with Song test that reputation?

JillianVolts

Plot twist the daughter also likes Infs and they play at eachother's beards to keep people off their backs

_Ms_Mayflower

I feel like totally feel the impact of the title for this one. *The nerve* of him to suggest this. Ewww.

Mimsynims

Also kinda wanna see the daughter, is she as intense as her dad?

_Ms_Mayflower

You mentioned in a previous comic that peers keep trying to set Mansa up, how does he deal with it? Is it blanket no, or does he go on polite social calls and go through the motions? Also how jealous is Song? Or does he know Mansa is loyal AF and therefore find it laughable?

_Ms_Mayflower

He is offering his daughter?!?! Does she get a say in this? Also, how generous, we won’t make you pay for someone traumatising you.
