Of course Elon’s fucked up and entitled, he’s been simultaneously told his whole life that he’s the blessed child of a goddess, above all that don’t worship, AND that he is her servant, worthless by comparison. How do you hold those two thoughts in your mind at once and stay sane?

Cw: Religion!

I think my past with religion shows mostly through Elon. The thing I look back on now and see most prevalently is the willingness to take advantage of a child’s trust. Telling them from birth what they believe and taking away their ability to disagree with it. It just completely strips you of your desire to question the world around you when the answer you get back is “it’s a holy mystery” or “it’s just doctrine”.

This is not a dig at anyone who is a religious adult, you’ve had time to process, question, and reaffirm yourself in your beliefs and I think that’s awesome! This is just what I’ve noticed in large cult like institutions.

That is exactly my experience growing up catholic! I’m actually pretty guileless/gullible by default, and so religion really had a negative impact on me as it affected my critical thinking skills in general. I genuinely trusted the adults around me, and so I just went with it for years. Eventually my parents (who really only went to church because of pressure from their families) decided that we could stop going when I was about 11/12. I can’t imagine what would have happened if my parents didn’t pull me and my sisters out of there.

Lauren

Well, a little. Think of it as wine at church during prohibition!

My first thought was that the “blessing” was magic he had to consume, like the church is a dealer trying to hook and then deny them. I realize that is probably not the case but it was a rather horrifying thought.

you summed up my feelings on religion and its cult-like toxicity pretty perfectly. i'm sorry you've had to deal with religious trauma as well 💚

Planetary System

Whenever I read that someone was "born a Baptist" or "born a Muslim," I think, no, they weren't born with any religion at all; they had it pounded into them when they were too young to resist.

100%!

I completely agree and relate to the caption, things like that can really mess up a child's mind. Personally one of the worst things that my religious upbringing left me is the constant guilt and sense of never being good enough, or having to ask for forgiveness for doing even the simplest things in life... I still haven't been able to get those things out of my head

Marta

Right! And there’s nothing wrong at all with sharing your beliefs and culture with your children, that’s beautiful! But it’s how they discourage and shame kids when they raise valid questions

Whiteley Foster

Yeah, it’s probably not something that’s healthy for them 😬

Whiteley Foster

That's exactly why my parents, both raised religious, chose NOT to baptize me nor my sister. We were given the choice to pick our own beliefs once we were old enough to even understand the concept. And to me that meant the world. Taking away a child's ability to find their own path breaks my heart

Is the exposure to magic from a young age what influenced Elons addiction? Or is the water and the blessing safe and doesn’t raise the chance of you getting addicted?

Little0cean

Exactly! Reasons aren’t excuses! 💕

Whiteley Foster

oh yeah, totally feeling, understanding and relating to your caption, these are the things I'm still processing and trying to wrap my head around 😔💔 Elon's upbringing must have messed him up real deep, and it's not surprising to see what he's become, not that it excuses any of his current behaviour, just acts as a warning of sorts... 😔
