That's a good point! I don't remember to what extent Song out-right lied about the money, but at the least he let Mansa think it was from legal entertainment-based jobs, right? Yeah, that was likely something Mansa was a mix of naive and deliberately ignorant about. These poor dummies! I hope they get SO much better at talking to each other!

Comicgeekery

Another thing to consider is that Mansa made the choice to not ask how Song was bringing home the large suns of money. He had to suspect that the answer would be something he didn't want to hear. Mansa needs to take responsibility for his part in creating a block in communication and ignoring the possible dangers Song may find.. They should have talked about Song's money making options and a clear look at their budget.

His “I’m okay” face isn’t even remotely convincing 🤣

Oh, Song's choices could have easily had even more catastrophic consequences, no doubt. Maybe stupidity is too soft a word? It was a combination of being stupid, being selfish (for himself AND for Mansa), being desperate to keep the best and most stable things he's ever had, and being both genuinely ignorant and deliberately ignorant of the larger issues at play. What I was arguing above was more about how I don't think Mansa will be able to see the full broader picture of why Song made the choices he did. The EASY perspective for someone as hurt as Mansa will be to assume Song was an idiot who should have known better but didn't and now Mansa's been left alone to clean it all up. Sometimes over the years Mansa might be more charitable and try to think of it all complexly, but it's really hard to do that for someone in the middle of it all. It also depends what level of communication he gets from Song in the meantime. Do the letters offer any apology or explanation? How often are they sent? Can Mansa write back at all? Will Ghost let the letters through uncensored? Someone as smart and honestly good as Mansa is probably going to spend years trying to make what happened with Song make sense. "Was Song really a criminal? Did someone force him to do these things? Is he a HOSTAGE now?!" But, whatever Mansa decides, he's going to have to face again and again that Song never told him any of it, and that's going to hurt the most. I wonder if Mansa will even know how to express the anger that will inevitably come with that. Because, while it may not be true that Song was just stupid (or even mega-super-cosmically stupid), but that will likely be the best answer Mansa can cling to. Everyone else who will talk to Mansa about it will very probably insist it was malicious. Of COURSE Song betrayed him. Of COURSE their love wasn't real. Can't trust infernals, right? Or, from other infernals and allies, maybe infernals aren't inherently untrustworthy, but someone with Song's shady background? What was Mansa honestly expecting? This is still going to be an enormous blow to his reputation and maybe also career. I can't imagine the endless scorn he'll have to face now, never mind the even worse pity.

Comicgeekery

Imo it's a little more than stupidity. It was a series of decisions that could have landed them both in serious trouble if Song was caught, and Song just didn't seem to have that part processed and understood. Mansa could have lost everything alongside Song through being guilty by association

Soulless Eden

Whew, Mansa REALLY went through hell because of Song's lies. I know them getting back together and being happy is the endgame, but I'm super curious how you're going to make that happen! I imagine things are going to be very rocky for a while and they'll both have things to shout about. Mansa honestly did everything he knew to do and maybe things could have worked out if Song had been able to communicate more at any stage, but honestly I think there's a lot about Song's life and the experience of being infernal in general that he's never properly understood. I wonder if Mansa has ever had to confront the fact that even the greatest ally in the world will never know what the lived experience is like. I think it will be easy for him to just blame Song at first, just assume that Song was an idiot doing stupid, dangerous things because he personally has trust issues. I wonder if that will be shaken by Mansa finding out about why exactly his (human-passing) colleague has also been so touchy about infernal-related politics. Very excited to see the main story start!
