Tough love mommy, Song will receive no coddling from her.
Perhaps her blunt attitude reminds you of someone? 👀
Okay, tough love is great and all... and Song definitely needs a wake up call, but if I was Song I would have answered similarly... He's had the night from hell, Ghost just stripped him of his identity, reducing him to accept his mistakes as a new title, and thereby defining him, and then is pissed that he didn't answer the question the way she wanted? I'd be confused on how to answer then, since it's clear he's not supposed to say his name, and every way that he's used to define himself has been taken from him.

I think she very much realizes it and that’s why her berating includes everything you say Song needs right now. She literally points out that bigots want them to believe they are nothing and then when she rejects his answer, she functionally tells him that he is *not* nothing, none of them are, try again, answer better.
It’s not in the nice way we might prefer Song be treated right now but “tough love mommy” isn’t a title you usually give to nice characters. If we paraphrase out the harsh tone, they’re really just saying “Bigots and abusers made you feel this way—Are you going to believe them?”

That was a very tough love way of saying “you are not nothing” 😅 but I do admire that Ghost isn’t letting him sink from self-pity into self-hatred. She’s a great character

(Sorry this got longer than I thought it would )
I like this particular bit of bluntness/tough love - sometimes when we grow up under other peoples' control we need something to help us figure out how to reframe our critical thinking process, kickstart it in a way, and the way Ghost is speaking to him in this panel, providing specific context to the Who Are You question and why its important, is the kind of thing that helped my thought processes develop new tracks to follow, and oh I hurt for Song with all he's going thru, but I do hope this will help him in the long run with how he views himself and the society they live in.
Especially the part of 'Dont devalue our struggles/who are you' that phrasing right there is pretty cool to me.

Song's having the worst day. 😥 I'm sure eventually Ghost will help him but not until she learns more about him as a person. That will take time.

Yeah but on the other hand would she have saved Song from the cops if he didn’t show her how powerful he is and that he is able to conjure? She did originally want to blast him as well after she took care of Elon.
I got the impression that the only reason that she offered him a spot to hide (and to train him) was that his abilities might be useful to her cause.
Sure it was nice that she saved him for Elon but I suspect that not saving him there was against what she fights for. She fights against those who try to keep infernals in positions where they are powerless. And poor Song was very much powerless in that situation.

I would describe both Mansa and Thomas as blunt.
Mansa seemingly tends to say exactly how things are. But I don’t think he does that in a malicious way or on purpose. It might me more connected to him being on the spectrum.
Thomas also says exactly what he feels like. Especially when it comes to infernals. He really doesn’t seem to think about how him talking negatively about Song for example could hurt Mansa’s feelings. But I don’t actually think he (really) means any harm. He does seem to care about Mansa in his own way. Even if his advice and the way he delivers it is kinda yucky. If he didn’t like Mansa he wouldn’t care about what Mansa does. Thomas gets a kinda shitting looking „You tried“ star.
I feel like Ghost having to leave Thomas behind had profound impact on both of them and that it (among other things) influenced how they give advice to people who are in similar situations as them.

Ghost saved his life probably, and got him out of a situation where he'd likely spend his life in prison. She could have saved him and just...ghosted. She could have watched from the rafters as Elon maimed or killed him and let her smuggler problem resolve itself. But she didn't. She's already done more for him than she has to. It's regressive to expect a female character to also layer kindness onto all of that labor. Would we expect a gruff male rebel rescuer to coddle this grown adult?

I think she might be coming from a place where if she will be the person who tells him he is worth something and that he is strong and his own person that would not have such an effect on Song as him claiming his self worth himself would, bc rn he was caught in a situation that he says he had close to no power over, so the first step to healing might be to cease power over his own narrative 🤷🏻♀️
of course, this is coming from Ghost having her own past and her own traumas, but this feels very genuine to her character

A bit like Etty, if I'm honest. Though Etty is kinder in her frankness.

Ok but considering she found him pretty much being assaulted by a human, surely she realises he feels that way because of bigots and because he has been made to feel that small. How is berating him going to help? He needs to be told that he can be someone, that he is not nothing-not to be told off for how he feels because of what's been done to him.
(Sorry for the rant, I have Feelings about emotional abuse)
