Mansa and Song (Chapter 1 | Page 10)

Let me tell you the completely unnecessary story of these two.

Immediately following this, Myles drags Sage back to base at gun point, with Sage too exhausted to cast again to defend himself. Once there Myles, who has had the opportunity to calm down, tells his commanders what he’s seen, though now he’s not so sure he should. Sage is arrested for fratricide as a way to remove them from the situation immediately and it is decided to prevent more casualties they should be met with a firing squad in the morning. Sage gives Myles that “how could you do this to me” look of enemies to lovers as they’re being taken away.

Myles visits Sage in the night with the express intent of springing him, but he (and all of his himbo energy) doesn’t exactly know what to do afterwards. Sage owes him a debt and knows that he will likely face the same fate that Sage might have if they were to stay here. So they flee, returning to Sage’s rural home town to hide out for a bit.

Myles learns about infernals, their culture, and all about Sage (and what makes his unintentional companion so wonderful) in the process, and the two go from enemies to friends to eventually lovers. Although Myles was initially welcomed by Sage’s friends and family the two soon find out that they will not be accepted as a couple. They try to stay for a few more weeks before the harassment becomes unbearable and they relocate to Port Alma, with Sage reeling from the loss of their support system.

Knowing what happened in the country, they assume it will only be worse here now that magic is being banned, but no one will know their faces so they’ll stay out of the way and live a life that appears platonic to anyone on the outside. Myles takes care of Sage and brings in money as a laborer until Sage has adjusted to their new life. Once they have they get a small job too and work as a doctor, healing secretly while infernal rights get locked down all around them. Myles and Sage get closer over the years, determined to stay together until they are physically separated, but it all remains a well kept secret. Which works… until it doesn’t.

They’re found out again years later when Sage is busted for healing with magic. Police raid their home and discover no evidence of criminal activity but it becomes clear that they are more than just friends. They are arrested but eventually released when the police can’t prove anything - they keep Sage a week longer than Myles and it takes them some time to be themself again. Myles hangs in and slowly brings Sage back from the edge.

But they rise above it. Ignoring the shouts in the streets, cleaning their little house of graffiti, and keeping their affection in private, but they don’t run, they’ve made a home here. By this point the elite have started taking infernals as courtesans (for gross possessive reasons) and with the two of them past middle age Myles suggests it to Sage so they can live the remainder of their years as partners that the law would have no right to separate. Sage agrees and they become the first legitimate couple to enter into a human/infernal courtesan contract for love.

They are “wed” and live the remainder of their years in historical obscurity, no one would ever know that they were the first - especially not Song or Mansa. But a rumor of their union has already been started and though others don’t know the names Myles and Sage, they begin using the courtesan contract as a stand in for marriage. Until over half a century later when Bill 58 is passed.

The story that didn’t need to exist! Thank you for coming!

Ashfae

Okay I'm back after reading the description and omg I'm weak😭😭😭 Their backstory is beautiful and very much needed, thank you for sharing it with us!! As always I'm in love with your storytelling and world building so obviously I also fell in love with Sage and Myles' story❤️❤️❤️ Also I love the way their story connects with Mansong' main one, it's brilliant!!

Marta

THE TAIL WRAPPED AROUND THEIR LEG I CAN'T THIS IS HURTING ME TOO MUCH

Marta

It gives the world so much depth, and we love your side quests 🥰

Cj

❤️❤️😭😭

Dominika Beregi

I’d love to do a comic about them next 🥲

Whiteley Foster

"The story that didn’t need to exist! Thank you for coming!" Nah, that can be your next comic. 😉

Res Judicata

There’s always later. You survived one round of back story already 😂

BlueBaggins

There's so much detail in this world! Amazing ❤️

Atelerix

That’s precious, in the best way! What a story, good for them 🥺❤️ Now we know it too.

Nicola Coxon

You are most welcome!

Whiteley Foster

It would if anyone knew! They kept their lives and love just for each other ❤️

Whiteley Foster

If anybody wants to write a fan fic please go ahead! Myles is a himbo who says the wrong thing a lot and Sage is a neurodivergent shy druid type 💕

Whiteley Foster

Like a diary 🥲

Whiteley Foster

A pioneer couple! I hope they grew old and happy together and even if not during their own lives, I hope their story inspired others in the future 🥺

Nicola Coxon

I’ve never wanted to see a fan fiction more! Thanks for sharing their story I’m obsessed

Clare

Thank you!!

Whiteley Foster

I could get so lost in their side plot!

Whiteley Foster

Oh dear how traumatic!!! But they made it work 😍😍😍 thanks for giving us the side quest without derailing the main plot

BlueBaggins

It's these seemingly "unnecessary" world building and character building back stories that give a primary story a feeling of depth and richness. This kind of work is never a waste of time and I'm grateful you shared it

Lemaris Designs

This story is so lovely. Thank you for sharing it with us! Here’s to hoping Mansa finds *some* small record of it in due time and shares the story with Song! I think it would mean a lot to them, even if they don’t publish the information

Rachel Maxwell

I Don’t see why not!

Whiteley Foster

Thanks!!

Whiteley Foster

When I GM, every little bit character has a story; they're all people. That makes such a difference! So, to hear their story is so fulfilling. Thank you for sharing Myles and Sage with us. 💜

Aly

You’re welcome ☺️

Whiteley Foster

That was beautiful, I really appreciate the detail you put into their background! I know you are still working through the main storyline but maybe we can see like a one-off picture of them later? Just something where they are happy? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😁

Cathlo Morton

Wow!

Faye Hyland

It was a nice story. :) thank you for sharing

Ariana Lipman

But I am so glad it *does* exist!! Thank you so much for sharing 🤍

Midnight-Radio

Could I ask something though? This is stupidly presumptuous of me but... In very recent revelation of Aziraphale's diary... I wonder if Myles or Sage kept one that might've been uncovered by the inf/human rights community and held as sacred text. Whispered about as legend underground and in hushed voices.... Unsure if it actually exists... Only to be revealed later and published for the world to see in an attempt to show how far back in their history this sort of arrangement goes. Held as gospel in response to those older conservatives who claim "everyone is suddenly into infernals. This has never been shown to be an occurrence before now!" Sorry. I started thinking about E.M. Forster's "Maurice" being gently based off of a real gay couple he knew but didn't publish when it was written because of the backlash and ostracization he would've seen. And was only published later, after his death and after homosexuality was decriminalized in the UK (if I'm getting my gay literature history correct😅)

White Wood Asmr

Thank you! I’m so glad you think so!

Whiteley Foster

These are the stories I don’t have time to draw 🥲

Whiteley Foster

thank you for sharing their story, absolutely agree with overused.underrated, it broadens the horizons of the story even further and gives a very interesting view on the beginning of the situation infernals and infernal-human relationships are now ❤️ and it's a beautifully written story too! gives a lot of insight on the history of the matter and lots of emotions too ❤️

sick_pineapple

That was so beautiful, Whiteley. Thank you for sharing.🙏🙏🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

White Wood Asmr

The do a little bit!

Whiteley Foster

Thank you so much for sharing their story 😭 It’s beautiful and very much needed ❤️ You could give us the backstories for all the characters and we would be thankful. I also looked back at some of the past pages and couldn’t help but notice that both of them look kinda similar to the stained glass window we saw back in calf look. I don’t know if that’s on purpose but I think it’s a nice touch regardless.

Little0cean

Haha fair! Read the description, there’s definitely more to both of them than this moment 😊

Whiteley Foster

Thank YOU for reading it!

Whiteley Foster

Aw thanks!

Whiteley Foster

Thank you for sharing their story 😭❤️

Ash S.

Correction- that story is VERY much needed and the backstore/lore to an important plot point. Beautiful as always, Whiteley!!!

Overused.underrated

What NO!!! Edit: I'm pretty sure if we'd know that before naming him he'd be called Asshole McJerk
