I don't have any experience with real rations I think. I was always in the barracks and the quality of the food really depended on the cook of the barracks.
Although I remember, we once got hot food in the field during a small exercise in winter that was REALLY GOOD, which was likely due to the combination of exhaustion/high hunger level, decent to good dish and circumstances (eating for the first time out of the metal dishes) and being in the cold.
