Imperial Fist - Speed Yellows

First of all: Let me know if you want to see any other aspect of the Imperial Fist Marine covered as a full lenght video tutorial. Maybe something that isn't as clear from the PDF, etc.

In this video I am showing the quickest way to paint the yellow recipie for my Imperial Fists scheme. Working with different consistencies, inks andso on - the video also ties in with the Basics video - try to spot all the aspects I explained about pushing pigments, brush control and so on!

Imperial Fist - Speed Yellows

Yes, I have had the same problems with Scrofulous Brown! Which is sad, because it is such a great color tone! I used Saffron Sunset by Reaper as a substitute ultimately because of this. Unfortunately it is not entirely as intense as SB - I would recommend you try mixing in an ink to get more saturation/intensity. You can try like I did, with Reikland Fleshshade or Fuegan Orange (unfortunately I dont know if there are any other good inks out there). I feel like the straight Orange colors that are out there won't give the results you want, so try with an ink! Skrag Brown will indeed dull it down a lot. And also it is more brown than orange, wchich will take away from the intensity and just make it dark and desaturated (too much "black" in it) while an orange ink has a pure hue and gives good saturation. The same goes for ice yellow, it desaturates a hue as well, although different (too much "white" in it). That's why I stop at flash gitz yellow ;) So if you want to keep the intensity and have no saturation I would recommend staying away from ice yellow! I hope that helps, let me know if anything is still unclear!

I'm having my first real attempt at painting a high contrast yellow at the moment. I've had a lot of trouble figuring out a recipe, especially for the shading. In a lot of work I see very saturated red/orange shadows which I was trying to recreate, but I think some of this saturation may be intensified by the photo. In real life when I try mixing orange browns (scrag brown for example) it just looks muted and muddy against something like yriel yellow. The only dark saturated orange I found to mix well with yriel is burning orange by reaper, but I didn't want a contrast of a matte/satin finish. After reading your PDF (which was incredibly useful) I tried scrofulous brown which Is the best shade colour I've found so far, a good amount of saturation and not too dark for yriel yellow. My only issue is that it's one of the paints that I resigned to my draw of Vallejo paints that I find unusable because of its awful consistency and coverage. I've had this with a lot of Vallejo paints where it's streaky even on my pallet and just refuses to go on smoothly. I've tried extensive shaking and even bought another pot but it must just be the nature of it. It has less coverage than yriel yellow which doesn't seem right. I was just wondering if this was your experience with the paint? Or if you had any alternative shade/shade mixes with yriel that would give the same saturated orange/red hue? I also tried squig orange by citadel but I'm worried that I might be introducing a pink hue depending on how I mix it in since it's a very reddish orange. Also regarding the highlights, I initially was just going to keep it simple with just 3 colours scrofulous/yriel/flash gittz, but the temptation to push the contrast further got the better of me and I went up to flash gittz/ice yellow 50/50 and also glazed some scrag brown into the scrofulous shade. I'm worried this has made it worse since my overall highlight placement is more of a traditional zenithal gradient without any sharp reflections. As a result I feel like it doesn't read as yellow as it should, because my shadows are quite dark and large, and my final highlights of flash gittz/ice yellow are slightly desaturated, even after glazing over them a few times. I was wondering why you stopped at just flash gittz and if you'd recommend I do the same, I just felt like it didn't pop as much because like I said I'm not painting reflections on the armour. Sorry for such a long post haha, I have a lot on my mind about this colour and your content has been very insightful.
