Norman Bates being charming and sweet is part of why I couldn't stand the remake. Vince Vaughn always struck me as inherently creepy (I have no idea if that's anything about him or if it's all me). I read that Joaquin Phoenix was up for the part and can't quite decide if it would have bothered me for one of my favorite actors to be in a remake that pointless or if he would have made it better. Like Anthony Perkins he has an extremely solid resume for both creepy and boy next door.
