I've been iin love with the Spelljammer setting for over twenty years (since I first learned of it). It's D&D meets Treasure Planet. Does anyone here remember my art from ~2002 of two Dark Elves in 18th century uniforms? I need to dig some up!
Anyway, I'm DMing Spelljammer again, for my hubby, daughter, and my colleague Stefan. Stefan was over last Sunday for character creation and the first steps in the Spelljammer universe. He plays an autognome, and the way he came up with a name was the most hilarious I've ever seen: he came equipped with a bag of alphabet biscuits, grabbed a handful, ran them through "Inge's anagram generator", and there he had Ace Jr. , autognome. He proceeded to pick the funniest background options for character creation, and arrived at a former pirate (though he was actually a cook) who was left stranded on a small space station because the pirates didn't like his cooking. (He couldn’t even fault them; he can't taste or smell, after all).
In a free period on Tuesday, Stefan happened to have a free period as well, so we sat down and he described the character to me. That was pretty fascinating - I’ve drawn hundreds of other people's characters over the years, and I’ve never met anyone who was able to describe something so weird so precisely!
