*drumroll* First watercolour since 2021 =D

Shallan sketching. Watercolour on Bockingford paper, just under A4 size.

🥳🥳🥳

Four years and two months without this. And all because my daughter said "I want to try book-edge painting" and I said, I‘ll try a landscape, can't be that hard. Oh, I think I can work in traditional media again!

Today, I went through the Herculean task of sorting through my art materials, cartographing the paints I had, sorting out small tubes that had dried up, trying out my old watercolour pads and identifying eight whose sizing hadn’t gone bad. Now it would have been extremely clever to choose the paper for this painting AFTER that step, but instead, I managed to use one of the three pads that actually had gone bad. Luckily, the blotches and bleed-outs happened in spots where they didn’t hurt much, so they just add some character now. 😅

I'm glad I did this one first, so now I can choose the perfect paper for Dalinar. ^^

It's so weird to do this on paper again. There’s more of a flow than with digital, I overthink less, and just DO. Imperfections, stains and smudges I‘d correct digitally can just stay.

Edit: Original is sold! =)

I read that too! There's not too much loss - so far, I’ve found two Daniel Smith tubes, the small 5ml ones, that were half-used up anyway. All the other brands have kept well, remarkably so. I’ve had Schmincke dry up on me, usually the small tubes too.

Oh you can cut up watercolor tubes and use the pigment that way. I read that quite often since I started with watercolor again. 😅 So happy that you are doing traditional watercolor again. 💕

Yes, paper can lose its sizing, making paint appear blotchy as it soaks too deeply into the paper. It'll still be good for gouache, I suppose!

🥳 So happy for you! What a journey it's been, for you. Way to go for always finding a way around the obstacles ♥️ Also... watercolour paper goes bad?? 😭 I guess that explains what's been happening with one of my small blocks of paper... I just thought it was because I'd done too much erasing of light pencil work or something... 🫠
