I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I've been really getting into animes that are focused on a certain hobby or lifestyle (I just watched one about a trip to Antartica, and now another one about being in a musical ensemble.) I only recently realized that I'm so drawn to these types of shows in particular. It makes me think about all the different paths I could have taken, all the different lives I could have lived. It makes me feel somewhat sad that life is so short, and we can only experience so little. You say it perfectly - the thrill of becoming part of another world is worth grieving when it comes to an end.
