I just finished the second season of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I liked it much better than season one. It’s found a better balance of style and storytelling, so I’m happy to report that it’s now only slightly abrasively cartoonish. (Save for the weird tonal shifts where Count Olaf straight up murders people.) I haven’t read the books or seen the 2004 movie. I do own a copy of The Tragic Treasury because Stephin Merritt has the voice of a very disaffected angel. But I’m only here to talk about Esmé here. She is everything. A villainous femme fatale who dons costumes was a much needed shot in the arm for the series. Here she is as she appears in The Carnivorous Carnival.
