That’s how the old expression goes. Some of my favorite exchanges in The Underburbs are meant for an audience of one. Taking experiences from my own life (in this case, the actual, bizarre evaluation scale from my day job) and applying it to my teenage witch and vampire comics is a way to entertain myself as I write and draw the scene. People don’t have to get the direct reference. It’s there as flavor, and hopefully makes the characters’ dialogue feel more natural. As for my area manager, I think the word she wanted was “adequate.” Proficient sounds way better than good.
