Hanna-Barbera had some downright adorable character design. When I was growing up in the days before cable and dedicated cartoon stations, the Wacky Races fell into some kind of weird HB catch-all. It was a weird treat to see them, though I usually felt a little lost due to the huge cast of characters. The only one you really get to know is Dick Dastardly. The rest are all more or less defined by their gimmicks. Maybe this is where I got a soft spot for villains.

"If I know Dick Dastardly this race is going to be a blood bath"

Nope, just the same great Joe we all know and love.

Depends on the villain, I guess. I think without their tragic flaws, some characters wouldn’t be villains. Take Dick Dastardly. He can get far enough ahead of the other racers to set traps that eventually backfire on him. He can’t get out of his own way. He blows a commanding lead literally every time. I think in the end, it’s the struggle that makes cartoon villains interesting. And I’m starting to ramble at this point, but that’s why I never liked the Apocalypse arc in the 90s X-Men cartoon. He was just too unstoppable to enjoy, so much so that even his defeat would be equally unsatisfying.

Do you find yourself thinking, as I did -- and perhaps still do , that things would be much more interesting and enjoyable were the villains to succeed rather than the heroes?

Another great Joe!!
