Irish Catholic background here and I can't even recall the deadly sins being taught, and I served on the altar and even wanted to be a priest as a teenager. Are we sure its not Orthodox more than Catholic? Possible I just forgot it of course.

2023-11-10 10:32:45 +0000 UTCI am Catholic and while I'm not super knowledgeable about the subject my understanding of the sin of greed (or avarice) was that it was defined as the disordered (this word is key) desire for personal or material gain, often at the expense of something else that is good. It is normal for humans to have passions and desires and these desires can be good (desire for money to feed family for instance) they can also be disordered towards a bad end (desire for money to inflate one's ego). The latter wouldn't be defined as greed. I'm sure lots of other people can probably give a better explanation about what the official definition is however.
