Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 30

I know I'm commenting a year later, but this kind of violence is happening in our world right now and people are justifying the killing on both sides. It's a product of colonialism. A strong military power annexed the land, local unrest with occupation starts building, a flashpoint happens (in this case Envy shoots the child), violence erupts, and then the dominant military power responds with a massive amount of force. The conflicts keep escalating and eventually the force of the dominant military power become genocidal. I'm making this comment in the summer of 2024 so you can probably guess which conflict in the middle east I'm referring to.

2024-07-05 17:07:58 +0000 UTCI am with Steph on this one. I like these characters but as a German myself I find it really hard to feel sympathy for the perpetrators of genocide who now feel sorry for themselves after the fact.

2023-10-08 12:20:20 +0000 UTCVery well said. It's our duty as descendents to learn and grow from past mistakes, make amends, and learn to judge every situation with some amount of honest, unbiased compassion or at least understand that there is no good vs evil or black and white situations in life and especially not in war. The people that still cling onto those grudges just get on my nerves and we should be able to look at these incidents logically and understand that a lot of it was a power struggle between countries and none of the citizens truly wanted anything so atrocious to happen. What's the point in demanding retribution from people who didn't even exist at the time? Besides, with the way the world is now, so many of us are entangled anyway. There are many Japanese-Koreans, Korean-Japanese living in both countries, and America is a freakish mixing pot. Myself for example, I'm first gen American and white. My dad is native, my mom is German, my Grandpa Scottish, my aunt and cousins Japanese, and my cousins on my dad's side are Philippino. No matter where I look, I'm related to someone so for people like me, it's difficult to point to any one side and judge them for their ancestors mistakes 😂 I'd be blaming my own self regardless.

2023-08-24 07:00:14 +0000 UTCAmerica definitely wasn't squeeky clean and we did intentionally target civilian population centers. However the atrocities Japan chose to commit shouldn't be excused as many of these were not necessarily in response to US aggression (China). I do think the attack on Pearl Harbor was justified from their perspective in a way but the lines get so easily crossed and muddled in war. Best recourse is to just assume everyone did bad shit and always ask questions. War is never good and victors always get to tell the tale. There is a reason History is written by the victors. Edit: I will say, no one alive should be held responsible for the actions of their ancestors or government unless they themselves continue holding the same sentiments. Civilians usually don't get to make a choice and post conflict we should attempt to move on and reconcile so as not to repeat History. Some people just can't comprehend this and it's disgusting and disappointing.

2023-08-24 06:31:42 +0000 UTCFirstly; I never said Japan didn't have a history. I was specifically talking about the citizens that suffered in a particularly ugly war that I was personally instigated to look into. The Japanese government screwed over their own people, after all. Secondly; I was simply stating facts that happened to the Japanese citizens and how it was wholly unfair to blame MODERN Japanese citizens for the atrocities they didn't commit during a war, so I don't see why you felt the need to bring up more atrocities that modern citizens haven't committed. Seems redundant, defensive, and a little prejudiced. If you wanted to make it known what the Japanese government did during a war, you could have made your own comment.

2023-07-18 08:31:37 +0000 UTCNot saying that America was blameless during WW2, but if you think they committed more horrific things Japan I have some bad news for you. Look up the Nanjing Massacre, comfort women, the general treatment of the Chinese and native islanders by the Japanese, and most importantly look Unit 731 and its absolutely atrocious human experimentation.

2023-07-18 07:43:47 +0000 UTCCorrect also after ww1 Japan got nothing for helping the allies, then Japanese people were not allowed to enter the u.s pretty much passing them off if they hadn't received this level of racism and humiliation it may have been avoided, as for the atrocities I find it hypocritical that allies held trials for the nazis for war crimes but the Russians weren't charged especially since some of the the holocaust camps found were once in Russian held territories, plus they couldn't charge them since Russia could have called them out and made them look bad.

2023-07-18 03:53:27 +0000 UTCMy worst real world example of your heavy discussion is WW2 against Japan. I remember in 2011 people were saying that they deserved the tsunami disaster because of WW2 which triggered me to look into the reality of the situation since they were actively insulting my family who are Japanese. I just remember all my life being told in school that Japan attacked us first un-instigated and that they're evil and we were right to bomb them the way we did. However, that's just a watered down propaganda. We had a deal with Japan that we weren't going to move in on them during the war, but we sent shipments to England, making them nervous that we were joining the war, so Japan sent a warning to back off, or they'll attack. Obviously America befuddled that situation and carried on, leading Japan to attack a known military based. In retaliation? We attacked villages and the poor and downtrodden, we dropped canisters of oil and fire on their straw houses and cut off all ability for them to recieve food to put pressure on the government. The Japanese government in return took the food from their citizens and gave it to their soldiers. They abandoned their own people while Americans committed horrible atrocities against the villagers that would be considered war crimes these days. Even in the states, the things American soldiers did to the Japanese Americans was heinous. Then to top it all off, we nuked them. They say that they didn't understand the scope of damage they were doing when they nuked 2 places of Japan dead center, but they did and feigned ignorance later. They wanted to decimate Japan because we were losing. Japanese people are still being born with cancer and defects from the radiation. If you can stomach it and want to see what ww2 really looked like in Japan, "Grave of the fireflies" is an amazing anime movie by Ghibli. But be ready with tissues. Honestly war is disgusting no matter what side your on, but the winners usually do something more horrific than the other side in order to win..
