Spirited Away Reaction

Comments

I think it would be better to watch the original which has Japanese actors (speaking Japanese) with english subtitles.

mo Iranai

ジブリdubはやっぱ流石に受け入れられないなぁ〜w

H

Big disagree on not letting your kid seeing it until they're 13. My friend and I both saw it when we were 6 and we both fell in love with it. I think it's a great experience for people of any age to watch.

KKona Bill

How did I just discover that you guys reacted to this movie 😭 This is one of my favorite movies ever and I will never get tired of rewatching it, if only just to stare at all the beautiful art or the moving things in the background (the radish spirit dancing is still my favorite 😆)

Alexis ! X

I would love to see more Studio Ghibli reactions in the future, they're suuuch amazing movies! "Kiki's Delivery Service" is a great one :)

joshua_j

spoopyjhope

Can we watch My Neighbor Totoro next? 😊

Lorraine Hernandez

I never saw Kiki’s delivery service but always saw ads! The animation reminded me of that movie!

Wes And Steph

My favourite movie <3

Alishea Ally

Would've loved it even more if it's the og than dubbed.

Lorraine Hernandez

I think you'll enjoy "Your name", its such a good and beautiful movie.

Lily Ramirez

More Studio Ghibli Reactions please! I'm so happy you did this!

A!

Petition for yall to watch TRAIN TO BUSAN hehe who's with me

drew

i watched this a couple years ago in college but forgot most of what happened. I feel like i liked it this watch more than i did back then lol

Charmaine

I'm sure they would, but that's not a bad thing. It such a good movie and very important to see the real victims of conflict. I think it's good for the mind and soul to look tragedy in the face and learn from it. Ironically, watching things like that really helps me heal my anxiety and depression and reminds me what's important in life, you know? 🥲 so we can all cry together and be grateful for our loved ones 😂

Chels

Funny, I was about to recommend the same film. But I think they would cry a lot watching this.

Didier

I also watched it pretty young! It freaked me out a bit, but I still think it's a good movie for kids, it has a lot of wonder to it. That thing about Haku isn't (necessarily) true though, it's a fan theory. It's a fan theory popularized by Toshio Okada who's a famous anime producer and has a good bit of evidence going for it, but it's not something ever shown directly in the movie or confirmed by anyone who worked on the film (as far as I know). I wouldn't go calling it a fact, even if it's an interesting interpretation.

Hex

It's funny because I think most people would consider this a "kids" movie. I know that for at least me and a lot of people I know we watched the movie when we were on the younger end. I will admit though I remember a lot of things in it freaked me out when I was little, like the parents turning into pigs or no face especially.

Hex

The way that I would be super down for an Avengers reaction though 😂

Shanuka

The next movie I would recommend is My neighbor Totoro, it is a beautiful movie. Also I would recommend is Your name.

Milagros Camarena

Two that I would recommend next is howls moving castle and laputa castle in the sky also graveyard of the fireflys but have some tissues ready for that one

Kret

I love this movie so much, it’s definitely wild but I love that.

Ariana Carrington

this was so unexpected ! i'm super excited to see it. Hopefully you're interested ini doing the other ghibli movies, they're really all awesome and there are so many iconic miyazaki movies <3

Blue Bubble

omg i was so surprised to see the notification ! I'm so glad you watched spirited away, along with all studio ghibli movies - the animation, story line and messages are always beautiful and thought invoking and overall just enjoyable. I hope you carry on reacting to more studio ghibli movies.

Waffles

I grew up watching this movie! I think the first time I watched it I was six or seven. My favourite Ghibli movies are Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky. I really can’t recommend them enough ☺️💜

bizarre☆azar

it's interesting to hear steph say that she wouldn't show this to people below 13 because I watched this in kindergarten at japanese school Fun facts: Haku takes the form of Chihiro's brother who died saving her from drowning in the river. That's why she got flowers, that's why they are moving in the first place, and why the mom's kinda grumpy in the beginning. Attempts at processing their grief. Their "true" love is sibling love and not romantic love.

Vincent Lee

dakota fanning was in my neighbor totoro but another actress named daveigh chase (same voice actress as lilo from lilo & stitch) plays chihiro. and yesssss to howl’s moving castle that’s my second favorite ghibli movie after spirited away too!!

junie

Imagine at the end parents said : "oh actually let's go back for seconds"

kinetic98

The reason why you probably watched this in middle school art is because miyazaki films are very well known for how beautiful and gorgeous the animation and art is. I studied animation in school so I can see all the work and the intricacies of all the frames and movements and everything. I looooovvveee it so much hahaha. I know the story can seem so outlandish to those who aren't used to it, but I was fine with it hahaha. The music is gorgeous as well! I have music boxes with a couple of the songs from this movie and some other ghibli movies ^___^ . The english audio was a bit jarring since I love the subtitle version of most things better, but it was alright. I think Dakota Fanning was Chihiro. Oh, and I recommend Howl's Moving Castle if you've interested in another Miyazaki movie. Spirited Away is my favorite, but Howl's Moving Castle is a close second. Totoro was good too ^__^

theGeekOutGirl

I agree on the other Miyazaki movies suggested by fellow patrons. I think Ponyo and Arriety are also nice to watch as well :)

izkath

Every reactor tends to watch japanimation in original Japanese as anime fans tend to worship original voice actors, so it's ironically kind of a fresh air whenever someone react to those in their own native language.

Didier

I remember watching this in my childhood. The animation and backgrounds are beautiful, the music is memorable and incredible as often with Ghibli movies, but I don't know about the story. It feels all over the place. It's funny that it's one of Ghibli's most famous movies since it is in my opinion the one with the most complicated/weirdest plot.

Didier

the best one imo either Kiki or Only Yesterday

Hena

Omg I loved this movie as a kid, last time I watched it I was 10. I remember thinking it was such a beautiful movie, it’s brought me so much nostalgia 😭 please do more studio ghibli movies!

Bunie

Oh. That’s too sad. Watched once and haven’t recovered

Ami

Howls moving castle, a silent voice and ponyo(the better little mermaid story) next!!

Ami

Nothing wrong, the dub for the movie is so good!

Gustavo

what's wrong with the og version?

Maya

Omg thanks so much for reacting to this. Kiki’s delivery service is also a really good ghibli movie :)

Jerica Cabebe

Was just about to recommend this!

Beth

You need to watch Princess kaguya 😭💜

_Anto_

Please react to Grave of the Fireflies next 💜 (very sad but bittersweet and important) But the thing about this movie is that it's chock-full of hidden references that hold important meanings from Shinto stories, so I'm sad that you aren't familiar enough to see the beauty in this movie. I seen it very young so even though some of it is creepy, a child will enjoy it still. Essentially the story starts with Chihiro being an ungrateful brat who's a coward, but when it comes down to it, she becomes selfless and brave and faces any challenge thrown at her. She showed kindness to that kami covered in the trash humans left behind in his river, earning that medicine (she knew it was medicine because she ate a piece) which she uses selflessly to help no-face spit out his poison and Haku to spit out his curse rather than using it for personal gain to get her parents back and leave. The story of no-face is a folklore about a spirit that wanders aimlessly. They are harmless, but they live off spirit energy and eat other yokai (powerful nature spirits but not kami) but when they eat a spirit, it can adopt their attitude, so when No-Face ate that frog, he was poisoned by his negative, greedy energy. He's just a lonely spirit who wanted to be friends with Chihiro because she was the only one kind to him, but the frog was the evil one. Bathhouses are spiritual in Japan because they believe a bath washes away your sins or negative energy and cleanses/heals your soul, so this bathhouses is meant to help heal and cleanse spirits, but greedy humans stumbled upon it, trespassed and caused trouble. If they hadn't stole food, they would've all been fine and could've left. The story itself represents that not only to be brave and kind and not to judge others, but to be respectful to the spirits and nature around you. Shinto is an animistic religion where they believe everything has a spirit and you mustn't offend or mistreat them or you earn their ire. Also the folklore Stephanie mentioned is a spirit called will-o-the-wisp which are a fae creature that can either lead someone to safety or their death. It's a Celtic folklore that's also animistic and has the same beliefs. Everything has a spirit you mustn't offend.

Wow such a nice surprise! I love Studio Ghibli movies! I hope the next ones are Howl's moving castle and My Neighbor Totoro💜

Moonchild87

Happy you guys watch this!! Now that I know you guys haven’t watched the ghibli movies please when you have time watch howls moving castle, princess mononoke or Kiki delivery service. My childhood movies 💜

lindap

Wow

Lorraine Hernandez

a silent voice next if you haven't done so

drew

I'm so happy to see this! It's a fantastic movie just like every other Ghibli. But this is a beautiful representation of Japanese folklore and Shinto beliefs. It's a bit of everything, but namely inspired by a story of a princess who ends up working at a sento (bathhouse) to get in the Kami's good graces. It's a bit late to say this seeing as how you recorded it all, but I hope Stephanie doesn't lay into it too hard. Like all folklore, Japanese folklore is strange and uncanny, but it is beautiful for that and it's deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. Its a fantastic thematic story and it would be akin to saying the Bible is strange and disturbing (which it is) but you are talking about another precious culture that is dying out as we speak

Chels

I’m glad y’all watching this in dub, big W!
