Shinto is all about animism. There is life and spirit in all things and you should respect all things. However if harm is done to you, you are permitted to act in defense of yourself whereas Japanese Bhuddism incorporates an honor system where you may defend your honor. Both are similar to the Norse beliefs so I think that's why the author tells this story well, but the author is telling the story based on historical information which is HEAVILY covered by Christian influence. I think the author did a good job sifting out a lot of the Christian interpretations, but there is still some left over, but that's understandable. Nobody fully bothered to translate actual Nordic texts to English whereas the Christians make sure everything of theirs is in every language lol. But anyway, I think the author does a good job due to their Shinto and Japanese-Bhuddist (which is different from other forms of Bhuddism) influences. The Norse beliefs are equal parts Animism (spirits in all things and ancestor worship) and Polytheism, but unlike other beliefs, Norse believe their Gods originated as human and transcended to Godhood (similar to Shinto on the rare times a man was made kami) but there is layers to their beliefs. You have spirits, then you have the Alfar (basically the fae) and the Jotun (magic using Gods that are Fae-esque) the Æsir (Odinn, Thor) The Vanir (Dwarves, who btw are not small. Freyja is Vanir) and then you have the creatures like Jormundgundr, Fenrir, Sleipnir, ect. Who are intelligent and basically sub-god since they are technically Jotun but messed up genetics because of Loki's shape-shifting abilities. There were in fact giants that were a type of Jotun, and even ice Jotun who were troll-like or giant and cyclopsy, but not all were like that. Skadi (Skathi) is a ice Jotun who lives close to the Æsir because she was forced to marry one of them. In Norse Paganism, we worship all these varying types of Gods and sub-Gods as well as the Alfar fae and the spirits of nature, AND our ancestors 😅 its easier to say we worship nature, spirits, and life itself, though we might pick a faction or select Gods who we follow the examples of. As Lokean heathen, I follow Loki and his children as well as give respect to the Jotun. The Christians tried to repaint the picture of Loki and the Jotun which Marval exacerbated, to make it seem as if Loki was viewed as the bad or evil God and his children were tools of war, but that wasn't the case. They have their symbolism that would be follow just like any other Gods. Fenrir is only depicted as the evil wolf who wants to eat the world, but he is a symbol of what happens when you let your fear and bias cloud your judgement. Odinn feared Fenrir, so he treated him like a monster, but Tyr loved and respected the wolf and vice versa. Fenrir was as intelligent as his father and knew he'd be betrayed by the Æsir, but his love and bond for Tyr is what led to his confinement and the breaking of that trust is the beginning of Ragnarok. Fenrir would never have become enraged and vengeful if not for Odinn's fear and mistreatment of him that forced Tyr to betray him. Loki being liminal and a trickster means he is non-binary in all ways, the world is made up of shades of grey and different colors and he also represents radical acceptance. Instead of sitting in suffering and wishing things to change, he makes the best of the situation and plans what he can change. Hel is not only life and death, but the beauty and solace in the ugly. She is deformed, but sweet and soothing, she is the epitome of the gentle embrace of death and she welcomes the laymen into her fields with a parade of gold (the color, so honey, mead, wheat, bread) and shows kindness. Jormungundr is the unending cycle of life. The snake eating its tail is related to his imagery and not only that, but Thors hatred of him represents the unending cycle of hatred and vengeance, where once you start chasing that path, it goes on and on. Sleipnir, I confess i don't know much about because his story is more about the story of Loki getting the man to build a protective wall for the Gods and all the shenanigans that happen as a result, so there's not a lot of up front knowledge about him, so I am going little by little through each of the gods to understand them deeply and will get to Sleipnir eventually 😅 anyway, so this is an idea for you guys to go off of for what Norse beliefs are like. There is other factions, new and old that change the practices and world views, so keep in mind this is only my take branched from my family's traditions and oral folklore.

New comment so my other one that's unrelated isn't too long, but in Norse beliefs, there is "different strokes for different folks" as it were lol so we tend to misinterpret that the Norse idea of being a warrior was only in battle, but they had huge respect for those who "fight" the harsh lands and climates to survive so there is afterlifes for the different ways of life. Hel would accept those of humble life into her fields of wheat where they rest in peace until their next life cycle where they are reincarnated. Freyja accepted into her halls the women who practiced Seidr or other forms of magic and Shamanism, or women who were strong and noble (sometimes warriors or leaders themselves) and Odinn would take on those who died in battle to feast in his halls and fight and hunt under their next life cycle. (The worst people were, they would be grain to be reaped or those who were horrible people and warriors would be locked in a realm of unending fighting and suffering until their souls were ready to become wheat, then basically other levels until they were ready to be reborn) but anyway, because of the love around Vikings (which was a job, not a culture) people misunderstand that the Norse ONLY worship literal war and violence when that was only one aspect of their culture and it was a necessity for survival at the time due to the infighting of the tribes and the different countries like the Swedes and Danes. Long story short, the Norse worship strength of will, character, and resilience no matter the form it took and for some it was how well they did battle (and their character in battle) and for others it was how they were as people trying to survive the world. In fact, poetry was one of the biggest respected signs if character over how you did battle. Not all could fight, but you better damn well know your verses and stanzas. If you couldn't retort in Flyt, you were looked down on as weak of will.

The bathing scene is so realistic because it actually happened. It's what sparked stronger tensions between the Saxons and the Norse immigrants that wanted to settle on the edges of England. History likes to paint the Norse as ruthless rapists and killers and while that has some grounds for truth, the Christian English were just as vile if not more so since they dehumanized the Norse to justify their cruelty towards them. Heads up, this show is heavily rooted in true events and accounts of the tensions between the Saxons and the Germanic Tribes. That's why there are famous figures such as Floki for example. And obviously Lief Erikson (I think that was his name? Lol I'll edit this again if I'm wrong and remember to fix it) Oh and the Norse J is pronounced like a Y so Jomsviking is "Yomsviking" and V is F and W is V lol I struggle in my lessons because my brain wants to look at the romanized letters and read them the same as ours, but in truth, they have their own alphabet with their own sounds like ö in Völk (my Grandma's and mom's first maiden name before my mom's name changed to Hansen) my Grandma would bite my ass off if I spelled it Volk. 😂 "They are different letters!" She always says. Pff Steph, Floki isn't Loki. 🤣 Floki is a famous historical Viking and Loki is the Norse Æsir/Jotun God. Thors also isn't Thor lol. Also a tidbit, Loki and Thor are red-haired traditionally because of their fire Jotun heritage. Marvel got everything all kinds of wrong by not only making Loki ice Jotun, but also making Thor and Loki brothers. Loki is bond brothers to Odinn. Another tidbit for fun since I'm a Lokean (I worship Loki and his children) Loki is a liminal God, not a God of chaos though he is chaotic, he is playful and as much as he gets them into trouble, he equally gets them out of it. He never had mal-intention until Odinn's betrayal. Anyway, being Lininal in all things, he is a non-binary God and is equally male or female and it is described that he was more effeminate and beautiful than even Freyja with elven features and long fiery red hair. He is also mother to sleipnir but father to Hel, Fenrir, Jormundgundr, and his 2 human children (who were slaughtered by Odinn in the most heinous way btw. It's such a sad story of how the Æsir betrayed and turned Loki into the harbinger of Ragnarok) You're right that they look down on treachery. If Floki is caught killing Thors outside of a legitimate duel when he hasn't committed a crime worth death, not only would Floki be punished, but Floki would be punished in the afterlife by being damned to eternal fighting and suffering until his soul is "cleansed" of his dishonor. They are very honor based

Buddhism heavily discourages violence, sometimes even in self defence, one major aspect of budhism is non violence towards others(including animals, hence vegetarianism), as violence will give you bad karma, which will prevent you from "going to heaven", but on the other hand Buddhism was also used to justify imperialistic Japan. It's just as susceptible to be used as an exuse as any religion

The Egg Unhatching

cant wait for them to realise how deep this show gets
