Jimin's Production Diary

Ah yes I know all that. Rapline has been heavily involved with lyrics since pre-debut. I thought I said that in this comment but it might not have been this comment 😂 my comment was more abt the production side of things since that’s what Wes + Steph were talking abt when I wrote the comment. But I love you outlining all this for them, adds even more context of their involvement in their music.

2024-05-06 00:50:19 +0000 UTCOMG! I finally got to finish watching this reaction. I started it yesterday but needed to be a parent...haha My daughter is graduating from High School in a few weeks and i am planning her reception. It was a long day yesterday. Anyway, A couple of things. I can't remember if you guys reacted to Jimin's Suchwita episode. I swear you guys did, but Jimin talked about how this album was a record about how difficult it was for him during covid. He also mentioned it on JImmy Fallon when he was doing his promotions for the album. So, yea JImin with the drinking was a thing for a min and something we only learned about because of the album. Jimin also did an explanation of the album which is on Bangtan TV youtube channel. I can send you the link if you want it. But during that he said how his father cried while listening to "Alone" because he didn't know Jimin was going through those feelings. Last thing which is fun facts: the studio that Jimin went to in LA in the same studio they used to record BTS's "Dark and Wild" album in 2014 while they were filming "American Hustle Life". I think it is awesome that whenever BTS comes to America to record they always use that studio, even now years later. The choir that Jimin used also helped in recording the song "ON" and J-Hope's solo "Ego" on the Map of the Soul 7 album. Thanks for the reaction, can't wait for BTS Monuments docuseries!

2024-05-05 20:20:33 +0000 UTCWell they know each other basicaly since debut so that’s why they were also able to do it like that and that good etc. Jimin spoke about it a lot in other product diary content and in Suchwita ep with Yoongi as well.

2024-05-05 17:07:48 +0000 UTCThey definitely were all in the writing and/or producing credits pretty early on! Besides them all being credited as writers on their debut album on Outro: Circle Room Cypher (lmao), the rapline had all been writing lyrics since debut, and Yoongi was first seen in the producer credits in 2014 with Tomorrow, Let Me Know and Jump. Jungkook also got other writing credits on their debut album on No More Dream and WAB pt.2. The entire vocal line were also all credited as writers on different tracks in 2015 on HYYH pt.1 like in Boyz With Fun, Hold Me Tight and Love Is Not Over, which Jungkook was also in the prod. credits of! They definitely started writing lyrics and melodies a lot more after the first 4-ish years but they certainly got their credits in early on!

2024-05-05 10:47:10 +0000 UTCIdk how to explain it but the way you guys react to these docs, it’s almost as if you’ve never heard the songs they’re producing 😂😂 idk—your commentary is like you guys are hearing all the elements to the song for the first time when I know good and well I watched you react to them 🤣
Ahjusshi_Brown
2024-05-05 04:40:51 +0000 UTCThis doc really captures how gifted Jimin is at creating melodies. Actually, since you guys brought it up, most artists start their song production with melodies. They create a beat, mumble some melodies, and after hearing that on repeat they create the song, the lyrics, and the message of the song. Everyone is different but among all the artists I’ve listened to + behind the scenes production I’ve seen, most have used this method. I actually think it’s significantly harder to start with lyrics and then develop or find a beat/melody that matches the lyrics. That’s why songwriters can have fantastic songs in the vault for so many years—they never find a track that matches the lyrics or does the lyrics justice So, no, Jimin isn’t singing lyrics he’s just making up melodies on the spot. That’s why Pdogg is having him record them, so they don’t forget them + so it can act as a guide when they do sit down later to make lyrics. Oh and melodies are the “tone of the notes” that you guys are talking abt.
Ahjusshi_Brown
2024-05-05 04:28:25 +0000 UTCHe has to be ridiculously rich if he’s been making all of BTS’ hits for the past 10 years 😂😂 and not just BTS anymore, he’s producing for almost all HYBE groups now
Ahjusshi_Brown
2024-05-05 04:01:43 +0000 UTC- Rapline has been writing BTS lyrics since debut - BTS didn’t start participating in the production of their music until their 4th and 5th projects (Pdogg has been producing their stuff since the beginning) - vocal line (outside of JK) didn’t start participating in writing/producing/melody-creating until around 2016/2017 (2015 for JK) Edit: “participating” might not be the right word. Rapline, especially Yoongi, had worked on production for BTS before— it just never made the final cut until then

2024-05-05 03:58:40 +0000 UTCThe people Jimin worked with to create this album are people who have been working with BTS for the past 10+ years. They are BigHit’s in-house producers. So yes, they’re very comfortable with each other. The main producer for Jimin’s album (the guy w/ the beard) is Pdogg and he’s been producing BTS’ music since debut. Edit: further display of their relationship is that the majority of the album (and this documentary) was created in Pdogg’s house. So, yes, that was definitely someone’s house.

2024-05-04 23:05:56 +0000 UTC20:55 Wes is right. I'm no music expert and I think everyone works on their music differently but Jimin and his team definitely worked on the beats and melodies first and Jimin just filled the lyrics part with gibberish/freestyle as a demo/guide version. When you saw them at Pdogg's house for "Face off" they were listening to Jimin's placeholder singing trying to come up with the actual lyrics that fit into the story and melody of the song :)
Lela
2024-05-04 23:04:46 +0000 UTCJimin is really good with creating melodies :) Jin said he came up with parts of the melody for Blood Sweat and Tears and Jimin also wrote the melody of the famous bridge in Dis-ease in like 3 minutes

2024-05-04 21:25:59 +0000 UTCSince I'm already yammering, a few more thoughts and answers. As always, thanks for the reaction! - I think each member's music-making process varies by project as well as personality. From what we've been shown, the process of writing the song that would become Promise was much more agonizing for Jimin (I'm getting a bit choked up thinking about it, tbh) than creating Face seemed to be. Perhaps part of it is that with Face he had a clearer grasp on what he wanted to do and how he would go about accomplishing it. (Okay, now I have to go listen to Promise and cry in the corner, brb) - Happy to see love for the choir! I *think* this was the trip to America that Jimin started a few days early so he could be with Hobi at Lollapalooza. The musical and choir directors, as well as some of the singers in the choir, previously contributed to ON and Friends from Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) and the Proof Live performance in 2022. One of the singers, Summer Greer, also contributed the vocals at the end of Hobi's song Ego. The choir director also worked on V's new song Fri(end)s (since it's a digital single and I can't check an album for credits, I'm not sure who else from LA participated, lol). If you'd like to see more of the choir, they're featured in the ON Commentary Film that was released with MOTS7. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npfs6afvIhk&list=PL5hrGMysD_GtvUTlIYDe5P--9ha0fBqjB&index=7&t=1s&pp=iAQB8AUB - During Face promotions, Jimin hosted a show on MelOn Station and this is what he said about the song Alone: "the 4th track. This song is, I think that you guys could probably feel it quite accurately if you listen to this song and looks at the lyrics, but to tell you the exact background of this song, it’s quite about the feelings that I felt when meeting the members at the end of the vacation. As I was seeing the members working very hard, I wanted to draw the moment that I experienced feeling very disappointed in me. Well, because I miss the members too, and secretly wanting to be comforted. I think that it’s a song that I want you to feel the loneliness just as it was. Just, I’d be thankful if you could enjoy listen to it." As I recall, the vacation he mentioned was in Dec2021-Jan2022, between PTD in LA and PTD in Seoul. Here's a link if you'd like to read the full transcript of the show; he discusses all of the songs on Face: https://sweltering-chipmunk-3ce.notion.site/HYBE-LABELS-Episode-1-7f50b2a6685548c7b5ba2fde515af63c

2024-05-04 20:48:15 +0000 UTCi'm just here to give pdogg (and all the other producers behind bangtan's songs) his deserved flowers. he's been working with bts since the beginning and produced most of their songs especially the bangers that you know and love like fire and dionysus and important to note that most of bts' title tracks were solely produced by him 💜 if you check bts' song credits, the names that you will mostly encounter under 'produced by' are pdogg, slow rabbit, hiss noise, supreme boi, adora, and el capitxn.

2024-05-04 20:11:14 +0000 UTCI'm at the 13:59 timestamp and I just need to say, you guys need to watch the Suchwita episode with Kang Yijeong. His producer name is El Capitxn and he produces a lot with Suga, (he's the 3rd collaborator on IU's Eight), they're friends. He also used to be an idol. He doesn't sing anymore and he explains why, but he and Suga have a really nice bond.

2024-05-04 19:21:13 +0000 UTCPausing 2 minutes later to say, the movie is Like Crazy, lol. Jimin explained in various interviews that he discovered the movie while he was trying to distill his feelings and experience into song lyrics. The whispered lines at the beginning and end of the song are lines from the movie that he felt really connected with what he was trying to express; of course, he eventually ended up naming the song after the film. The movie also served as the visual foundation for the Like Crazy music video. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Like_Crazy

2024-05-04 19:18:14 +0000 UTCPausing at 21:40 to comment before I forget, lol I believe what Wesley's describing is called "toplining," or coming up with melodies for an existing instrumental track. In other words, figuring out how the lyrics will be sung before the lyrics actually exist (and maybe writing lyrics in the process). [Got curious and did some more research: https://online.berklee.edu/takenote/what-is-topline-songwriting/] As I understand it, songwriting consists of 3 different aspects: writing the lyrics (words to be vocalized), composing the melodies (how those words will be vocalized), and composing the track/"beat"/instrumentation. So when we talk about someone writing a song (or having writing credits on a song), it can mean any of those things. On Face, the writing credits are pretty much Pdogg, Jimin, Evan, and Ghstloop all the way down the tracklist.* I believe that breaks down to Pdogg, Evan, and Ghstloop mainly working on the tracks and production with Jimin taking lead on the lyrics (naturally) and probably melodies. Of course, since they worked in a very collaborative style, there was definitely overlap in those roles. Big Hit tends to be a collaborative workspace, so this is very much in keeping with the culture that Jimin is used to. [* RM reviewed/contributed lyrics for Face-Off and Like Crazy; the original/demo track for Like Crazy was by Chris James and BLVSH; BLVSH also sang background and contributed lyrics to Like Crazy; Supreme Boi worked on SMF2]

2024-05-04 19:08:30 +0000 UTCright now behind the scenes of song recordings are very popular thing to release in kpop world. i watched some of them because they're really interesting. there are producers that like when the singer smiles during singing. sometimes they give instructions based on emotions? for example "sing more cutely", "be more bold/confident", "imagine you're angry" etc. ive also seen producer making the singer basically bend in half and sing with their head near their kness, id never thought itd work but it did. producers are really overlooked i think

2024-05-04 18:40:51 +0000 UTCTo answer both of your questions (20:45), I'm pretty sure he's just brainstorming here. The docu is going back and forth between days, places and songs, so my impression is that they're first working in the HYBE studio (the room with the keyboards), just getting into the right vibe, building the track and creating a melody by humming and just singing nonsense. Then at Pdogg's apartment (the place with the supreme pillows) they're putting actual lyrics over the hummed melody and then finally they're back at HYBE to record the final version. Then while editing this docu the clips are arranged so that we see each track being made from beginning to end before moving on to the next. I don't think these clips are going 100% linearly unless this is the exact order they worked on each track, which i doubt since it's pretty likely they worked on multiple songs simultaneously.

2024-05-04 18:24:04 +0000 UTCLike everyone else is saying Pdogg is a major producer that has been working with BTS since the beginning! During debut, the rappers wrote their own lyrics but not so much the actual track. How much the members contribute to the instrumental/sound engineering differs from song to song, but they have always had an involvement in the LYRICS (with very very few exceptions, like their all-English songs). I'm not sure if you guys realized this, but Jimin isn't actually singing lyrics during the building of the songs. He's just singing gibberish to get the melody down. You kinda saw this with the Proof demo songs, specifically Jin’s demo for Epiphany. The lyrics for that demo don't really make sense because the content isn't the point. The point is to get the feeling and melody of the words down. Thanks for the reaction! 💜
☾Joey
2024-05-04 18:20:55 +0000 UTCjimin's really good at coming up with melodies/toplines. i believe that he often just improvises and just kinda sings whatever words he thinks about in the moment. later they polish it, write proper lyrics but his melody/flow remains.

2024-05-04 18:19:51 +0000 UTCThe rapline has always written their own verses and often other parts of the song for vocal line. The vocal line themselves also contribute to lyrics or melody writing quite a bit. Namjoon and Yoongi had been writing/producing music years before joining the label and Hobi also took on the lyricist/producer role before their official debut. Pdogg, the producer in this very documentary, has been producing for bts since their debut too! He's the sole producer of bts' debut song No More Dream and he's also in the writing credits along with the rapline and Jungkook. The vocal line were all credited as writers within their first year or two and have been writing pretty consistently since!

They also worked in the studio and at PDogg's house. It is fun watching them make the music from the beginning and hearing how is comes together. It is crazy the different documentary styles each of the members used. Liked you said they each have a different feel and give us different info in different ways. It like that the guys did these documentaries.
