al is the dragon

Aiden Chang

Ah pls no. Al is not Subaru, but he probably have similiar power. When you look at his behavior, he can just randomly change plans, and be somewhere conveniently right on right time. And he is basically saying that he died few times later in season lol

LuciusDaLuster

I have a cracked Al is Subaru from another timeline theory wesley

ItsSimple

I really love Subaru and Julius’s friendship! They’ve come so far, Subaru acts all Tsundere to Julius but I think he secretly likes him more than he’ll ever admit.

Maroon

Haha touché

Wes And Steph

Great points!!

Regarding your conversation at the end, all I can say is that if adapted properly, you guys are going to love the next arc of Re: Zero (which might be adapted this season as well)

Martin Lopez

Very interesting, I don't know nearly enough about the Japanese language to speak on that regard. The English translation definitely reads like a callback to Crusch's words, and it certainly feels characteristic of Re: Zero and Tappei's writing to do so. It's also just characteristic of Subaru in general to repeat the lessons taught to him to others, he does it often like passing his mom's words onto Emilia for instance. I don't really think Crush not saying it in the web novel matters, there are a lot of changes between web and light novel, and light novel and anime. I think it's always best to treat an adaptation on its own terms. I think at worst, it functions as an unintentional callback, unless the Japanese phrasing in particular does not reflect Crush's earlier words.

D B

I dunno how much I'd want them to watch Tanya the Evil lol

Renegade

Subaru age in season 1 and season 2 is 17 and in season 3 he is 18 years old

I think it helps to assess the speech not as a standard motivational one you would make in say a public speaking class but rather a means to relate to the people hearing it and an expression of everything Subaru’s learned back when he felt the same way the listeners did. The structure of the speech is backwards according to conventional standards but understandably effective for the situation. Orators are usually taught to establish credibility first, but Subaru did the opposite, instead choosing to lower himself down to the audiences level to establish a better connection. Then he expresses that although he’s feeling exactly how everyone else is feeling, he won’t give up and will continue to fight, igniting a spark that has the potential to turn into blaze of resilience and determination among the people. Then he appeals to their sense of morality and justice, a call to action against evil who have hurt their loved ones. And then at the very end he reveals that he has beaten the indomitable witch cult before and brought down a Sin Archbishop when everyone listening thought he was a powerless nobody. Just thought it was pretty neat how the author decided to write this part and wanted to provide a different perspective in which to appraise it.

Crimson

I am wondering... you already have konosuba and rezreo under your belt... if you now do overlord and tanya the evil, you could then also do isekai quartett, which is a fun little crossover show between these 4 (and sometimes some others) Also, i wouldreally like to see you guys react to that ^^

yuuno scraia

The beginning wasn't a nightmare, it was a representation of the curses within him battling for control, the ones he still has from the Ulgarms back from season 1 and the new one from the dragon blood given by Capella

Prushkevich

"Why does she even need a knight?" She doesn't. Al is her jester.

Adam Pitcher

If subarus speech didn't have the start he did it wouldn't of worked it would have came across as the rambling of someone with power a bit like when a politician gives a speech about poverty it often comes across as out of touch and gets ignored as easy for you to say

Kret

Although, it is a such a common Japanese expression (下を向かない, lit. “don’t look down”) that I am not sure if this is a specific reference to Crusch’s words. Also btw, Crusch didn’t actually say those lines in the original web version of the LN. Although I agree it would be a cool interpretation.

Yorutia

Absolutely, one of my Crush lines, and it's really cool to see it meant enough to Subaru for him to echo it here!

D B

I love how he didn't immediately think he was the best one to do the broadcast. He has so little confidence in himself that you would never have known if you had just watched what he did in s1. If you had put season 1 him in front of that microphone, he would've BEGUN by loudly introducing himself and making a bold announcement that he would defeat all the bad guys! ...but that's a lie he'd have been telling himself that he has the unfortunate power of MAKING come true with Return by Death. He didn't have confidence in himself then, either, but his habits of blindly running forward and making it work out got him this far, so he kept depending on it. He has since come to value himself a little more, but he still hasn't accepted other people thinking higher of him than they think of themselves. He believes he is on an equal or lesser footing than all of them, despite his achievements, and he doesn't want to accept their praise because he is holding onto that image of worthlessness that is was identity, that he already got over once. A character flaw that the main character gets over but then slides back into is so realistic and such fantastic writing. This show is a cleverly disguised character story about a young man discovering who he is...with a rather extreme and elaborate fantasy setting. 😅 It is SO good though

Renegade

Yea the series is full of things that seem to have a lot of evidence for being the case, but there are always one or two major contradictions that seem to make it impossible, which makes me think that the truth will be something unexpected. There are several examples which are spoilers at this point, but also a few already exposed by the anime: = Minerva being Emilia's mother = Evidence: flashback in season 2 showing small Emilia with a silver-haired man and blonde woman; numerous hints by Fortuna and Pandora; Minerva's behavior when meeting Emilia; biologically makes sense, as we know her father to be an elf, so her mother should be a human; and her face simply looks similar Counter-evidence: Minerva lived and died 400 years ago (when Satella destroyed the other 6 witches), how could she possibly be Emilia's mother when Emilia was a small child 100 years ago? Even when Emilia was frozen for 100 years, her body grew fast enough to make it unlikely for her to have stayed a small child for 300 years. = Sirius being Fortuna = Evidence: they are both extremely powerful fire mages; their eyes, ears, and builds look extremely similar; Sirius's face is hidden by bandages, as if to conceal the resemblance; Sirius loves Petelguese, mirroring Fortuna's and Geuse's relationship; Sirius behaves similarly to Petelguese, who we know was corrupted by Pandora Counter-evidence: Fortuna died. (I'll also point out that they have different voice actresses, though I don't consider that to be very meaningful evidence compared to the latter)

Sum

"Stop casting your gaze downward." It feels truly impactful when Subaru uses Crusch's words to lift people's hope after she gave him a recommendation in ss1 ep14.

Nut Nuttanon

That's a good point, I wonder if the whole Al = Subaru thing is just a red herring?

D B

I totally agree with Wes that something is up with Al. He does give me weird vibes with the wistful line towards Beatrice at the end of the last Break Time episode, and his wistful look towards Subaru, Emilia, and Beatrice at the end of this one. It really did seem like he was avoiding Emilia. But it's really hard to imagine him actually being Subaru. He's just too different, and why would he be with Priscilla? I also don't think Al was lying when he tells Subaru he thought he had gone crazy coming to this world until he met Subaru who was also clearly from Japan. If Al was future Subaru, why would he have thought he was going insane? That's not at all how our Subaru reacted to coming to this world. And why would seeing a younger version of himself reassure Al he's not insane? I'd probably feel even crazier in his shoes 😅. I go back and forth on this theory a lot. I think overall I'm with Steph, I'm not really convinced. Too many things don't add up for Al to literally be Subaru. There's gotta be something more to Al though, because I get the same weird vibes Wes picks up on. We got a little peek under Al's helmet this episode (episode 7), and people have gone as far as brightening the image and comparing it to Subaru. Here's a twitter post if you want to see for yourself and decide whether they look similar (just to clarify, it's just a screenshot from episode 7 brightened next to a close up of Subaru's face, No Spoilers in the post itself. I didn't look at any replies though, so be careful!): https://x.com/rezeroyumiya/status/1856715179297501608

D B

It's funny but me too. I wasn't sold on the theory but I did think it was pretty strong. Wes's attempts to support the theory almost worked backwards and made me more doubtful though 😆

D B

I saw hype about "Subaru's speech" a month out before this episode dropped. "Omg this season will include the speech." People also pointed out it was going to be directed by the same person who did season 1 episode 18 From Zero - the episode where Rem and Subaru talk for the entire episode and it was masterclass. There was massive buzz from the people who've read the light novel - and they were all really happy with how it turned out. Suffice to say it was kind of a let down for me because of the hype surrounding it, unmet expectations. Maybe it's because I just recently finished Solo Leveling at the time which scratched that middle schoolers flex dream itch and I got used to it lol It's an okay episode I'd say

Loro Lukic

The beauty of Subaru speech is that thanks to the authority of wrath, if lifts one person’s hope, that feeling will spread regardless of their opinion

Skull Knight

In re zero, the author likes to put alot of hints that would misguide the audience so we would have our theories but not always be correct, with that make us think more and guess more but not be sure so it won’t get boring

Mohammad Bemana

The more I hear Wes talking about his Al theory - which I had some time ago, too - the less I'm convinced that's the case 😂 I mean, after watching those two Al break times with you guys for the first time, I just think he's some dude in a similar boat to Subaru. Like some kind of showcase, of what would happen if someone like Subaru had not been "blessed" by the witch and got transferred to some random ass place and had to fight his way up slowly without redo's.

Peter Butchens

I think the first part of Subarus speech he was trying to show that he relates to their fear and anxiety so that when he tells them to keep fighting they are more inspired by someone that is going through the same emotions

Weston Lowry

People were telling me that this speech was gonna be amazing and I got my hopes up and idealized a version of what it was gonna be. So when I first watched I thought it was okay, just like you guys I was like “is this really gonna lift me up?”But just like every single rewatch of Re;zero, this speech was really well executed 👏👏

Lark

Episode 9 and 10 have been absolute bangers. I don't know what happened over the break between the first and second half of the season, but they came back swinging. Maybe they needed extra time to cook, cause oh boy, they cooked. Episode 9 she came in swinging, and in episode 10 we learned which way she swings!😂 (this is a joke)

Iriza

Emilia doesn't have the evidence to conclude the witch's cult aren't in control of the watergates, so from her perspective running away = flooding the city and killing the wives. That's why she agreed to the ceremony, to buy time.

D B

Oh that makes so much sense! I was wondering about that scene too. Wish they had been able to include a short mention somewhere, but these episodes are always pressed for time as it is lol. Glad to get an explanation!

D B

I was worried when Subaru's speech began too, but in retrospect I think it was the right way to go about it. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I know Subaru's speech would have made me feel better. It's like Anastasia said, anyone could have given some superficial lip service. "We're the strongest, we'll defeat the Witch's cult easy peasy!" But that also would have been a very superficial hope. the fight's not going to be that easy, and when things get tough that hope, in my opinion, would be easily shattered by doubt. Subaru instead reaches out as an equal in a way that's really touching to me. "I feel weak and powerless, this situation is terrifying. I want to run away." He reaffirms their fears are natural, but then he continues. "These people [the Witch's Cult] made the people I love sad. They made them suffer, they made them look so miserable. That's not right. I can't accept that evil people like them just stomp all over us." Subaru's giving his reasons why he won't run, why he's going to fight probably helps inspire people too. I'm sure all of them feel the same. He also gives genuinely good advice about leaning on others for support. Even if you're surrounded by people, you can still get isolated in your own head. Look to the people around you, reassure them, with a hug or a nod. Then all he asks for is "Don't look down and leave the rest to me!" Ending his speech with his credentials as they only person to ever defeat a Sin archbishop is too good! If Subaru was asking me to run into battle, then maybe that speech wouldn't work. But if all he wants is for me to have hope we can win this, then I do feel empowered by his words! Maybe not everyone will feel the same, but I really appreciated how genuine Subaru's speech was. Obviously it's not the same as being in that world, but it still made me as a viewer feel much more confident and assured about the upcoming battle. I really started feeling like we could genuinely win this here.

D B

Subaru starting off the speech at the lowest was intentional. He was able to communicate to the people that he relates to their feeling of hopelessness. He too feels scared, powerless and useless to do anything. Genuinely connecting to the people where they're at right now - in a pit of despair. Then he switches it around by pulling them out of the darkness by inspiring hope to keep going. If a useless average nobody like Subaru can find the will to keep fighting despite feeling the same levels of weakness and despair, so can you. If Subaru can defeat a Sin Archbishop.. maybe you can too. I love that Subaru pulls back and reminds them to NOT start taking up arms, so instead he clarifies himself by saying do not lose hope. Keep fighting against that despair with the desire to protect your loved ones. Remember, Natsuki Subaru is a well known name in the country now. They've heard about his feats. So to hear someone feels the same things you do and can be relatable, only to have it be revealed the person talking is that new famous knight that has become legend.. yeeea I'm sure that's bound to inspire hope in anyone.

Reuben Filimaua

For what happend in the beginning with Subaru, remember S1 in the second Arc that all the curses from the dogs could not be removed. Only the dogs were killed, so the curses could not activate anymore. This was an illustration of those curses fighting against the dragon blood (the dragon) within Subarus body.

Mitschiro

Been waiting! Can't wait to see you guys catch up on the second half
