Hunter X Hunter Episodes 56-58

Nen abilities are kinda canonically vibes based. There is an ability discussed later in the manga that let's the user control puppets, except to him, living humans were considered puppets, but the one who stole the ability from him didn't and therefore couldn't use it on living people.

Mr Runic

beautiful

y are you mad

lol a little Frieren slip from Wes in this one. He called the Zoldyk's the Zoltraak's by mistake. Its been fun rewatching HxH 8:30

torexmus

I feel the same way… I wanted to hear the villains but almost all the villains can be seen in some way to not hate them. I admit though. O really liked Paku, pink haired girl, Nobu and Shal and pinkies owner.

Joshua Finkelstein

1:01:29 "why did illumi agree to that?" cuz he probably got paid and hisoka is a powerful ally if he survives. and presumably no one will find out it was him so he loses nothing.

ritwik jain sahu

Any particular reason? Skimmed the episode list again and episodes 70, 90, 96, 110, and 144 are all kinda awkward stopping points but minor enough but then episodes 130 and 134 are terrible tension killing cliffhangers to stop on. Meanwhile the only positive I noticed with even endings is 125+126 is a good pairing but that is not as dramatic of a mood to split up

Billbob

I actually think that overall the even-numbered episodes are the best ones to end on in this show.

Ura Meshi

Get ready for one of top 3 arcs in shounen history, enjoy!

Ifyoukn3wIt

why waste time on non-canon nonsense? you'd do this if you still crave more after finishing a series.

Ifyoukn3wIt

simply name dropping doesn't spoil jack, get real.

Ifyoukn3wIt

Thanks for the diagnosis doc 🫡. But on a serious note, how is this a spoiler? I didn't hint at any events, just posed a question cos i was curious as to why they designed kurapika like that 🤔. Thats like saying you got Naruto spoiled just because you know rock lee is in the show 🤷‍♂️ please make it make sense.

Yellow_Flash

I really can't stand these people. I truly believe these kind of people have mental health issues that urges them to share spoilers or hint at future events

Marcake

Wesley being super proud he knows Togashi's name! The GOAT lets his name be memorized. He's one of the best and most interesting writers. The way he effortlessly establishes nuanced characters in a relatively short amount of screentime, and the way his story arcs unfold is not typical at all.

Ethereal

pretty chill arc

Calt Being

And why do you feel the need to talk about characters that hasn’t been revealed yet so far in this version of the story?

Atlas Creation

Chrollo saying that he is surprised that the chain user is a woman, and then Kurapika takes off his wig as if that makes him look less feminine is always hilarious

JohnnyBSMK

Peak sports anime arc.

Rockycitygirl

I always love watching the Yorknew arc but I’m so excited for the Greed Island arc, you’ll both definitely enjoy it too!

Mikki

very nice, thanks for sharing

Harrison Hird

Why does Kurapika with the wig on look an awful lot like Kite?

Yellow_Flash

Oh, surprised you guys listened to that other comment's suggestion to do 58 with 57. I dont disagree with it and I'm never going to complain about more hxh but the previous episode pairings had a lot of later stuff kept together nicely, so gonna be a lot of cliffhangers in the future lol. Nbd really, just might be good to realign before some point in the 100s just because those pairs are the most dramatic and keeping the mood would be preferable.

Billbob

I really recommend to you guys to watch the scene where the chain kill Pakunoda in 1999 version.. its really good.. you can watch Pakunoda fear expression, how she feel when she hear chain sound, it came after her. episode 70, for everybody who want to watch old version.. The fact : Toshihiko Sahashi (the composer) wrote a music piece dedicated to just this one scene shows just how much care was put into '99 within their limited budget. The timing matches perfectly with the animation, suggesting that the director, animators, and composer all worked together to create this scene.

So this wraps up this masterpiece of an arc ! About Chrollo, he is a great example of building gravitas and aura around a character through a lack of exposure and thourgh withholding information, while giving just enough to hint at the true nature of said character. At first his seems like a generic reserved badass villain with a cool design who cares about his comrades, but there are little hints scattered around that add up and make you realize that Chrollo is a stroke of characterization genius. His personnality, background information and narrative role all integrated seemlessly with the themes of the Phantoum Troupe. First off, why did Chrollo decide to target Neon Nostrade in the first place ? Recall that the Troupe came to Yorknew City to steal the auction merchandise. Chrollo was intensely focused on achieving this goal. The only time that Chrollo diverted his attention from this goal was to seek an audience with Neon Nostrade. Chrollo's targeting of Neon's fortunetelling ability was most likely purposeful and motivated by a strong personal intrigue on Chrollo's behalf, namely : fatalism. "I don't consider Judas to be a traitor", Chrollo said after Uvo hinted at the possibility of a traitor among the Troupe. The exact reasoning for his belief can seem paradoxical and difficult to grasp, but the linchpin of his thought process is that everything in life is predetermined by God, thereby making it impossible for Judas to have the free will to refrain from his actions. In other words, Judas's fate was already written in stone, so there was no way for him to change it. I believe Chrollo adheres to this fatalistic philosophy, which is why he was so fascinated by Neon's ability which can seemingly defy fate, because he yearns for insight into where he is destined to go. This worldview is meant to be a key aspect of Chrollo's design and characterization (the religious motif on his suit, his "Lucilfer" last name, his fearlessness of death) and is also showcased in some of the rules governing the Troupe, like flipping a coin in case of a conflict. He himself admits to not understanding who he is, and I think the larger question at work here is the one he gave to Gon : "Is that the key to finding myself ?" Which brings us to the other layer of Chrollo's characterization : seeking his identity through the Spider. Chrollo is a blank slate with an identity crisis and no distinct state of self. Not much is known about his past, but we do know that he came from Meteor City, a garbage dump for the abandoned. So from a young age, Chrollo had an unstable state of belonging, so much so that Chrollo became unable to identify who he truly was. The reason is unknown but this is very apparent, and even his Nen ability hints at this. An ability designed to steal other people's Nen abilities since he doesn't have the identity to conceive a unique power of his own, and we know that Nen is a reflection of one's personallity. So Chrollo needed to find an identity desperately, and when one cannot create a sense of self through interior mechanisms, they search outward and latch onto external things that make them feel whole. And that is how the Spider was created. Now of course, a big reason for the Phantom Troupe creation is to give its aimless members a place to belong, Chrollo is not without compassion and he loves his comrades deeply. But I think the bigger reason for creating the Spider was a much more selfish one : solving his identity crisis. He was so empty that he made his identity the Phantom Troupe itself. This is why he places such an importance on jobs and rules to ensure that above all, the Spider survives and through it, perpetuating his sense of self. Also, the members themselves act as part af that identity because they themselves are the legs of the Spider. Was the stunning requiem for Uvo an act that was simply mourning the loss of a dear friend, or was it one that laments at the loss of part of himself on a level so profund, that there was no another way to communicate his pain other than destruction on a grand scale ? It was probably a mix of both. PS : I gathered this from the HxH reddit and the youtuber Aleczandxr, credits to them !

@Rex Tan I did get a copyright warning when I uploaded it but it just says that the owner allows its use in Youtube. Probably just means that I can't monetize it, which I don't care about anyway. I specifically uploaded it just for Steph and Wes, in case they do decide to watch and react to it.

Astor Lefflinker

@Rockycitygirl The downside of watching it before that arc is that it sets up the expectation for a particular scene. I think the best time to watch it is actually from the start of the series - as Togashi intended. I think now is good too before the Greed Island arc so that they can just kinda put what happened there in the backseat of their mind so that when that particular scene is on the screen, they won't be able to easily guess what happens.

Astor Lefflinker

Ohh god the old intro song is sooo nostalgic!

Rex Tan

Ohh you dont get copyright strikes?

Rex Tan

Been watching you guys for a while and I finally became a patreon member for the HxH journey! Love that you are both enjoying the world Togashi created. HxH is peak fiction. I'm eager to hear more theory crafting or if possible an episode where you guys reflect on the story, powers, and characters, once you're done with the series! HxH has a lot of nuances to offer so it would be sweet if given the chance to hear more of your thoughts. Thank you for the 3 episode special!

mass

Nah there is really no reason to watch that, it isn't good at all

Billy Overlord

3 episodes of HxH intstead of the usual 2 is such a treat, love it

H

not gonna say too much but the phantom troupe are not gone forever, they will still appear in the show

moltmolt

God I forgot how spectacular the writing was for this series. Togashi is truly the GOAT.

Crimson

Let's goooo Greed Island arc next week!!! It's my favorite arc!!!

Hayate

I think a lot of people are making this a bigger deal than it is, but yeah, it can't hurt to watch the first episode of the 99 version. I’d recommend doing it before the Chimera Ant arc, though - there's no reason to do it now since it has no relevance to Greed Island.

Rockycitygirl

Great choice to watch these episodes together! 🙂 One thing you misremembered was that Kurapika can use his Judgement Chain on non-Troupe members too, but he has to tap into his Specialist Nen by activating his Scarlet Eyes and probably meet certain other conditions as well. Only Chain Jail is bound to be used exclusively on Troupe members.

Rockycitygirl

Calt Being

Theres even a section on anti-head vs anti-neck in command and control warfare, which relates a lot back to how the spider operates. I’m not implying Togashi researched this stuff, only that he likes to think about these things. Or it comes naturally to him.

Since you're about to enter a new arc, I think it's as good a time as any to watch episode 1 of the 1999 version. The 2011 version cut a portion of Gon's childhood where he meets a character which led to him finding out about hunters. It also explains a few details like why his fishing rod is so strong. Most in the HxH community thinks that 2011 cutting that part was a big mistake. It's what happened in the manga after all, and it'll enhance your overall experience on the later arcs. If you do watch it, please watch the copy that I uploaded in Youtube. That's because the original version contains a non-canon line about Gon's mom. I edited that one out to avoid confusion. All else is canon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jZtxUx_ICo

I’ve been reading the newest manga chapters. You hit the mark on how Togashi can role play characters. I can’t even count on my hand how many moving pieces there are in the current arc and they’re all REALLY competent and smart. I’ve read that a lot of work in the intelligence community is grappling in the dark. You can feel the shape of something happening, but you can’t never see the whole thing. “What is information warfare?” Martin C. Libicki (1995) https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/tr/pdf/ADA367662.pdf “Is there an elephant?”.. “Coming to grips with information warfare, however, is like the effort of the blind men to discover the nature of the elephant: the one who touched its leg called it a tree, another who touched its tail called it a rope, and so on. Manifestations of information warfare are similarly perceived. Although some parts of the whole are closely related in form and function (e.g., electronic warfare and command-and-control warfare), taken together all the respectably held definitions of the elephant suggest there is little that is not information warfare.” Togashi seems like a very insightful individual.

I think its perfectly fine to have "Weird" feelings for the spiders, this is a fictional show and we should enjoy the story, the characters and the writing, I don't think just because a character is "bad" = i automatically hate them, you can still enjoy and like them for what they are in the story and the show.

Monaf

The Phantom Troupe arc is peak fiction in my opinion. It defies so many conventions of story telling and character writing, yet everything fits together so well. And emotionally damaged Hisoka is the funniest thing ever.

Runhua Tang

3 episodes weeeee!

Rex Tan

Fun Note: you never really hear Killua’s footsteps up to this point either, the attention to the sound design as far as I can tell was superb in that regard!

The Anime Dude

Love your reaction to Squala's death - I think you can understand more now why Kurapika felt bad about Baise and Tocino getting killed in the prior episodes. They may be bodyguards for the mafia and in a way, they're enabling the mafia's sick practices, but at the end of the day, they're just people who are trying to earn a living.

Astor Lefflinker

Paku doesn't alter people's feelings with her own, she just shares what she felt along with the memories. She was thankful towards Gon and Killua, and spiders understood it. But yes, Togashi is a master at making at least the main characters not be one-dimensional both good and bad, sometimes more bad than good. It is safe to assume that even Hisoka can be considered to be among the main cast. But even without him, Killua is not a "good" guy either, he probably killed more people than we can imagine. And it is all possible thanks to Gon's simplistic way of thinking. Even that appraiser said Gon was dangerous because he doesn't care about right or wrong, as long as people impress him. He didn't bat an eye about conning people, forgery and even that Killua is an assassin. He got mad at spiders for killing innocent people, but it could be because he knows that Kurapika hates them for that, so the enemy of my friend is my enemy (he didn't express this kind of frustration at anyone else, even Hisoka).

You said that removing others Nen could be Manipulator or Specialist powers. I will not deny that, but you should also consider: - Conjuration: Just as Kurapika could conjure a Judgement Chain that stays on a person and continues to judge for certain conditions or strike the targets heart, consider that you might also conjure objects that might search for and erase other people's such abilities (i.e. erasing others Nen). - Transmutation: A bit like how you said that maybe a Manipulator could have as a power to manipulate nen, a Transmuter should be able to make a power that transmutes his Nen into something that might dissolve anything it comes into contact with, and then have a version of that that targets Nen. In other words a Transmuter that makes an acid that only hurts Nen. Although in such a case I would wonder exactly how you would apply it to Chrollo, since it is implied to have Kurapika's Nen near the heart... Would one swallow the acid, or would it need to be a surgery type deal... Regardless of Nen category though (except maybe for Specialization) I would like to think that such an anti-Nen ability would be hard to create, with a big risk of the attempt becoming something of a failure unless the individual has talent on par with our protagonists.

Robin Berglund

Omg we got 3 EPISODES?? we love you guys so much and I hope yall know that we recognize how much time and brainpower it takes to keep up with all the shows you watch! Thanks for all your hard work! 🩷🩷

I marathoned your HxH youtube upload + the free patreon episodes in two days, and now a patreon for the rest of the journey. It's been so good to rewatch this show with you guys since you really appreciate the intricacies of Togashi's writing. One of the later arcs is most people's favorite arc, but for me, it's Yorknew. I just love the city atmosphere so much and the game of cat and mouse and subterfuge. With that said, I'm so hyped for Greed Island because it'll show how clever this show's writing in a much different way.
