Vinland Saga S2 Episode 23

Comments

Manga reader here, this moment hurt me so much, if onlyy Thorfinn knew

Kindyh Bordat

It's called "无为而治" in Chinese, a Taoism concept of governing, basically means "doing nothing is the best thing" (Not for all circumstances of course). But Kings and Emperors who dare to practice this during times like this, to be able to trust the people had proven to get good results. I think this is what this show is trying to say, true courage being able to let go.

You have to remember Canute's decision at last was real history. The real Canute did dismissed army in England after he came to throne, not because he talked to Thorfinn but because he was wise enough to make the correct move. If you know history you'll understand that there's an extent civilian can take consistent war, the fight between Denmark and England had been going on for long pass this threshold, people wanted peace rather than "winning". At this point the if the ruler is able to sense that and chose peaceful governance they would gain from it. If they keep the conflict going there will be risk of even more unrest. So it's totally realistic, good rulers could have these perspectives even without a guy been punched a 100 times telling them to. It's just a more dramatic portrayal of how this decision is made.

We can rationalize endlessly about whether Thorfinn's theory is correct, but you have to remember that at this point, Vinland is just an idealized place for Thorfinn. It's unfair to call it questionable because we're using modern hindsight to judge the decisions of a medieval-based character, who is first realizing a unique perspective on the world. Whether or not that ideal stands up to scrutiny is still ripe for further exploration in the show, much in the same way of Thorfinn moving from "full non-aggression" to "violence as a last resort". There's a lot of space for the show to develop into a more realistic perspective on things. Finally, what seems to always be missed with this perspective is that while contact andnpower have always been a constant struggle for all of history, our relationship with conflict has or can change. Countries first response to conflict nowadays is diplomacy/economics, and not violence. And this is the evolution Thorfinn showed last episode – some early version of what he sees as diplomacy.

I’ve always said the same: this felt like it could’ve easily been a season finale! Am happy we get 1 more episode though!

I always cry during this episode. I’m sorta jaded, but I can’t help being sappy. Its just really moves me seeing someone put in the effort in making the world better. Your comment that Thorfinn is a North Star to Canute feels entirely accurate. Someone that believes people fall for their worst instinct can still be redeemed without controlling them. It makes me feel that it’s okay to trust people, which is what I think Canute felt. It’s a very powerful feeling.

Rare

goated top 3

Monaf

By the way, the manga of the series is still ongoing. We're the equivalent of two 24-episode seasons ahead in the manga, if not more. It's still amazing.

Solitary

Does anyone know what they will react to after vinland saga?

kinetic98

After 2 seasons finally back home lol. It feels like another dimension now.

North America wasn't that densely populated, but populated enough I think to guarantee contact sooner or later. They moved a lot and needed a lot of land to live, I don't see how some tribes wouldn't encounter a nordic settlements (and if I'm not wrong, what happened irl to nordic settlements in vinland is just that: hostile locals that chased them down, better metal technology wasn't enough). It indeed makes Thorfinn's dream of absolute peace very questionnable, because humans are everywhere, and humans (lifeforms in general ?) fight to live. Even if there weren't anyone, you need strength to impose order in your own community when tensions arise. The bigger the group, the most likely it is that one day there will be a problem.

2nd season put Vinland in my top 3, alongside AOT and HxH. It's such a good series.

Calt Being

Its funny how stupid all of them are. ESPECIALLY Einar.

Carl Carlsonn

Just one more.

Rockycitygirl

Diogenes was the name of the Greek philosopher.

Cezar Bianu

There's one more episode and that's the season finale.

James

Thorfin and Einar didn’t take any money because they knew the farm needed Ketil’s wealth after losing hundreds of working men. They do need money for their plans. Getting ships and people across the Atlantic isn’t cheap. While the first season focused on Thorfinn’s origin, the second focused on his rebirth and calling, and the third will be his test. How can you protect those you love and fulfill your mission without resorting to violence and killing?
