He would always watch fondly despite everything going on in the family. After seeing him watch them for years, I believe that's how she knew to rewatch those videos for a clue. IMO he was quietly, very sentimentally attached to his family. The writers didn't have him display it in blatant ways but instead in small ways, like his constant reminiscing and always watching those videos. Also, yes, the money was in the panic room. It's just that she found it before they got to the house to look for themselves.
