2025-06-03 14:36:35 +0000 UTCGuys, please please make sure to use the "English" subtitles, and not the "English CC" subtitles. The English CC subtitles are for the English dub so they will sometimes completely change what is being said for a Western audience. For instance, when the guy interested in Geum-Myeong introduces himself to Gwan-sik, he doesn't say I'm a friend of hers, he just calls Gwan-sik "abeonim" which is an honorific for father/father-in-law. This is what sets off Gwan-sik and he doesn't ask "what kind of friend are you", he demands to know why he called him abeonim. This kind of cultural nuance is lost in the English dub/English CC subtitles.

2025-06-01 03:45:14 +0000 UTCHere are some fun facts: In real life, Jeju Island had its first female chief in 2002. Hong Kyung-ja (홍경자) served for 14 years (link to her picture and interview in Korean: https://www.ohmynews.com/NWS_Web/View/at_pg.aspx?CNTN_CD=A0003114447). In her final year as a chief in 2016, Jeju haenyeo (해녀) was included on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Here is a link to interviews with two haenyeo in English: https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/haenyeo-guardians-jejus-coastal-legacy. *Please note that one of the haenyeo's names is misspelled. This article keeps referring to one haenyeo as "Kim Hyung-M" (missing an "i" at the end). It should be "Kim Hyung-Mi." ========== By the way, I shared my paper (regarding Korean mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law conflict) with you last Wednesday, May 21. I have not heard back, so I can't tell if you received my invitation and read my draft yet. I am planning to remove access on June 7, but let me know if you need more time! Also, feel free to ask questions if you have any.

2025-06-01 01:47:20 +0000 UTCOh Eun-myeong... As an older sister to a younger brother (3 years 9 months apart) the whole proficiency in different strengths is so real. I was really a Geum-Myeong type until I for to uni, like I cried at bad grades. My younger brother was always a sports kid, volleyball and track & field star. Now he does high jump in university. We're not that close nowadays but I'll always love him (lol I was the one who taught him how to tie his shoes and I never let him forget that since he does so well in sports)
