might try putting some full pet bottles in a vacuum to see if that speeds up the perspiration? or sticking it in a bag with a strong desiccant. The answer probably is that the plastic is partially hydroscopic, and it hydrates and then dries. moving moisture out. ive definately seen tolulene and acetone make its way through thick walled, sealed PET plastic preform test tubes.

Back in college, we had a talk by a chemist from Dow about saran wrap. The older stuff was made from pvdc (polyvinylidene chloride), which worked well to prevent oxygen diffusion and prevent spoilage. The new stuff is ldpe (low density polyethylene) which is over 3000x more permeable, which has led to much more rapid food spoilage due to the different gas permittivities of the different plastics.
