Watchcast Schedule for October 2024: Horror Anthologies!

Greetings, Nextlanders, and a happy (or, as happy as one can be nowadays) October to everyone! Of course, October means another block of horror is on the horizon for the Watchcast, and this month we've lined up a trio of films (and some very special television episodes) for you. What's their commonality? They're all horror anthologies of various eras and flavors, which means lots of short form spookiness of wildly varying degrees of quality!

Very quickly, before I get into the full lineup, just want to mention up top here that our schedules are going to be a bit all over the place this month, as we will be taking some time off, and Brad is going to be traveling a decent bit. So there's always a chance we might have to shift some things around as far as the Watchcast schedule goes. If we do make any changes, we'll make sure to announce it, but for right now, this is the schedule we've got penciled in.

Monday, October 7th: Creepshow (1982)

If I had to guess, this is probably the first horror anthology movie I ever saw, and though it's way campier than the other movies on this month's schedule, it still made a lasting impression on me as a kid. I still wake up in cold sweats whenever my dreams are invaded by a soggy Ted Danson dragging me off to my doom--and it happens often! The pedigree of talent involved in this thing is still pretty nuts all these years later (George Romero! Stephen King! Tom Savini! Leslie Nielsen!), and while not every short is a stone cold banger, even the worst parts of this movie are still a lot of fun.

Where to Watch

Monday, October 14th: Trick 'r Treat (2007)

This is one of those movies I finally got around to a few years ago after a long time of hearing people rave about it, and you know what? Reputation earned! All of its stories, which take place alongside one another on a single Halloween night, are a good bit of fun, and it's got a killer (heh) cast. Our good friend Patrick Klepek apparently considers this one a must-watch every October, and who am I to argue with Mr. Scoops himself?

Where to Watch

Monday, October 21st: V/H/S (2012)

I think I did not fully realize just how many of these damn V/H/S collections they've made since 2012, but as I have been talking with folks about them in anticipation of doing the first film this month, people kept bringing up shorts that I couldn't actually remember if I'd seen or not, which made me realize I don't even remember how many of these I've seen, period. I know I've seen the first two, that much I'm certain of. And while I maybe tip toward the second movie being the better of the two, the first one has at least two or three absolute bangers on its roster. Haven't revisited this one in a while, and Vinny and Brad have never seen any of these V/H/S movies. Can't wait to see if this turns them into V/H/S heads or not.

Where to Watch

Monday, October 28th: The Treehouses of Horror: I-VI (at least)

To close out October, we're gonna do something a little different. We have talked over and over again about how formative the Treehouse of Horror episodes of The Simpsons were for us in our youth, and what better way to get us to stop bringing it up than to actually podcast about them? I can't think of any.

We're still figuring out exactly what the format for this episode will be, but here's what we can tell you now. We will definitely be talking about the first six Treehouse of Horror episodes (from seasons two through seven). We will also probably have some discussions of later episodes and shorts as well, so by all means feel free to watch as many of these as your heart demands, but those first six will be the primary focus of the podcast. We may also have a guest for this one, but as we're still figuring out scheduling, I don't want to announce anything prematurely.

And those are our plans for October! We very much appreciate everyone's patience as we figure out the aforementioned schedules. If everything goes off without a hitch, everything I've listed here will happen on the exact day planned. If not, we will make sure to let you know with as much advance as we can.

Hope you all have a great and safe October, and we hope you enjoy the shows!

I can't seem to find the Simpson's one anywhere in my feeds and the Watchcast is already moving on to November's choices. :(

Awesome genre choice and great film choices too! My favorite month was when you did the John Carpenter films and I'm looking forward to this one even more. Happy spooky season everyone!

Arrow Video is releasing Trick 'r' Treat on 4K on 10/29. The Nextlander to 4K Pipeline lives on!!!

Dan Fiorentine

Especially excited to hear Brad’s thoughts on evil Leslie Nielsen

Snek

Special guest Dan on the treehouse of horror episode?

Bob

Talking Simpsons crossover? πŸ™πŸ»

Chad

Such an awesome list! Trick r treat is so Halloween-pilled im somewhat surprised it’s going earliest. Edit: Oops I’m an idiot. I didn’t see Creepshow right up top.

Kaws

...and of course Trick 'r Treat is getting a 4k release that comes out two weeks after the watchcast episode

Yeah, with only 4 slots, this is a good selection representing different eras/styles of anthologies. I'm a fan of horror in anthology/short film format because you can get in, do your thing, then get out. And you don't have to have the characters win in the end to feel satisfying.

Michael Jacobson

I guess Kwaidan is too big an ask for this group. And to be clear Kwaidan rules.

Benji Black

As someone that can't do horror if I want to sleep at night, I appreciate that Simpsons block.

I'd love to see their thoughts on the 2nd VHS movie. My favorite one as of now. I haven't seen the last one and the newest one is out tomorrow.

Russell Robinson

Was really hoping for tales from the hood but this is a solid list
