“Why does he always do this stuff to us?” she asked me, tossing another stone. “Today was supposed to be our day. We were finally going to start our adventure. I just wish that there was some way that we could still go.”
“What if there was?” I said to her. Today was my birthday, yet it didn’t even feel like it. No dad, no Pokémon, and no way out of this town. I wasn’t going to let my adventure end here before it even had the chance to begin.
“What are you talking about?” Lila asked me.
“Well, my mom still has a bunch of Pokéballs stored away in the attic,” I said to her. “All we need to do is catch one Pokémon by ourselves, and then our adventure will begin!”
“But isn’t catching a Pokémon with another Pokémon dangerous?” she asked, concerned for our wellbeing.
“It’ll be fine. I’ll just ask her if we can use Chimecho,” I said to her. Chimecho was my mother’s partner Pokémon from her days as a Pokémon news reporter.
“You can’t be serious. That Pokémon is older than you. There’s no way that it can still fight,” Lila said back to me. “Lets’ just go to officer Jenny and tell her what happened.”
“You know that won’t work,” I said to her Officer Jenny won’t do anything because he was already given the Pokémon. We can’t take them from him now.”
“Fine, but we do this my way,” she said to me. “My older brother has a Growlithe that we can use. You get the Pokéballs, and I’ll get him. We’ll meet up back at your place.”
“Now that sounds like a plan,” I said, heading back home. Perhaps there was still a chance that I could make this birthday one to remember!
“Mom, I’m back,” I said, entering the front door.
“Oh my, I thought that you would be gone longer,” she said to me. “I thought that you would already be busy bonding with your new friend by now. Can I meet them?”
“Sorry, but there is Pokémon,” I said to her. “Mark tricked the professor to give him all of them; now we’re stuck without a Pokémon for our adventure. We’re stuck here.”
“That’s terrible!” my mother said in shock. “I should go have a talk with that boy's mother and make him give you back your Pokémon.”
“Unfortunately, I can’t do that,” I said to her. “They’re his now, and taking them from their trainer would be even worse. I was wondering, though, if you still had some Pokéballs laying around. Lila and I plan to catch a Pokémon for us to use on our adventure.”
“I do, but catching Pokémon without the help of a Pokémon of your own. Is very risky.” It was clear that my mother was worried about me, but this was something I had to do. I waited all my life to become a Pokémon trainer, and I wasn’t going to let things end here.
“Lila’s brother has a Growlithe that we can use,” I said, reassuring her that we wouldn’t do anything too risky. “We’ll catch a few Pokémon and then return it.”
“Well, you are an adult now, so I guess that you need to figure things out for yourself,” my mother said to me. “Though before I give you my spare Pokéballs, I have something for you,” she said, pulling out an envelope with my name on it. “It’s from your father.”
“Do you really want me to open it?” I asked her, not hiding my annoyance with him.
“Please do it for me,” she said, begging for me to open it.
“Fine,” I said to her. “Let’s see what it is,” I said, ripping open the letter.
Turn On Channel 13 At 4 pm.
“The hell is this?” I asked my mother, handing her the letter.
“Well, it’s 3:52 pm right now,” she said, checking the clock. “I wonder what he could mean?”
