heres another alternate mix of an UNKILLABLE ANGEL song - this isnt as drastic a change as with BURY YOURSELF but i thought it still might be interesting.
the way i write vocal melodies varies between 2 main methods - i'll either improvise melodies out loud over the instrumental and kind of repeat them a bunch of times until ive got something i'm happy with, or i'll write them out in midi data (i always use this electric piano patch in oxe fm for vocal melody sketches for some reason). the former method tends to yield more catchy and natural sounding melodies to my ears and i'm usually happier with the results, but there's an interesting kind of acrobatic/technical feel that comes with writing them out in midi data, i think because working that way and seeing the notes in front of you it makes less intuitive sense to stay on a note for longer and u kind of want to change the notes up more the way you would if you were writing midi data for leads and chords - like there's less variance from sounding out words etc so i think the instinct is to add more variance to the melody itself when working that way.
the melodies for this song were written out in midi data (the verses at least; the chorus mightve been kind of a hybrid of the 2 methods), which again resulted in a topline that was pretty technical, at least for my limited voice, so when recording it i was mostly focused on hitting the notes and not too much on the texture of the performance. it worked for the chorus since the song gets bigger instrumentally then, but i ended up re-recording these early verse vocals for the final version with more of a restrained, breathy tone to match the verses feeling more withheld musically.
