That Time I Got Reincarnated Into A Goblin Girl Chapter 14

I rarely get time to myself around here. There are times when I can’t take these off for days”
“Ugh, what am I doing? Talking to a baby that probably doesn’t understand a word that I’m saying. You should be glad that you don’t understand what I’m talking about. The world is a scary place and not always filled with good people or creatures.”
“You stay there, while I take care of some business in the next room,” he said, entering an adjoining room. He didn’t seem like a bad guy, but the way he talked and acted was as if there was something going on in this orphanage that I just couldn’t put my finger on.
Later that night I was brought to the dining hall with Sola and Tully who were now wearing the same clothes as everyone else. They seemed to like this place a lot and the other kids seemed to be treating them fairly.
And despite my worries, nothing has happened yet. The man was suspicious but didn’t seem to be dangerous. Earlier I saw him get scared by a mere spider. It was actually kind of funny to watch, a grown man jump on top of his desk the moment he saw a spider.
“Attention everyone!” The man announced from the head of the long table where Sola, Tully, and I sat as well. “I would once again like to welcome these three into our family, even though we don’t know how long they will stay with us. Now without further ado, let’s eat!”
Everyone in the dining hall started to eat without a care. Tully feed me some milk while feeding herself, and Sola was busy eating everything that she could get her hands on. The other kids even looked livelier than before. Everything seemed perfect…too perfect.
“This is amazing!” Sola yelled. “I can’t believe that we can eat this good every day!”
“T-t-thank you,” Tully said to him. “We-we are very gr-gr-grateful.”
“Don’t mention it,” the man said to them. “I just wish that I could do more for you three. After today things will be a bit different for the two of you.”
“What… do you mean?” Sola asked him, shoving a ton of spaghetti into her mouth.
“Well for one, you girls will need to start doing chores to help out and start taking a few lessons.”
“Lessons, what are those?” Sola asked curious about what lessons were since there wasn’t anything like a school in the goblin village. Though what kind of lessons would they be? Was this a world where school was common for people, or was it only available for the rich and nobles?
“Lessons are things that you girls need to learn to help you survive in this world,” the man gently said to her.
“Okay, what about Illya then?” Sola asked.
“I’m sorry, but since she is still a baby, she won’t be able to understand what is being taught to her. She will have to wait until she is older to learn.
“Alright,” Sola said, sounding a tad bit disappointed, but she perked up the moment that she saw vanilla frosted cake get brought out.
The rest of the night was actually quite fun. Everyone was having fun and that was all that mattered. Even the man seemed to be happy, well that was at least until then went back to his office.
Once everyone was finished eating and had their fun, they were directed to return to their rooms for the night. On the way back to his office the halls were dark and dim. There were only serval candles out to light the way.
“Now I know that it would be perfect, but I had one of the other caregivers fetch the old crib from the attic. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to deal with it for now since our funds are quite small. That party was way over budget and….”
“So, you’re finally back,” a roughly dressed man in his twenties said, sitting at the older man’s desk.
“W-w-what are you doing here!” the man asked, almost dropping me when he did.
“Careful now, there is no need to go ruining precious product now is there?” the man at the desk said to him, looking at me with a disgusting look on his face. “It would be a shame if anything were to happen to that one, especially~.”
“You were already here yesterday, why are you back here?” the man asked,” clenching me tighter in his arms.
“I’m here because of the most interesting letter that you sent us, talking about three life elf girls. A light elf, a dark elf, and a high elf, not a combination that I ever thought I would see. The boss will be most interested in getting his hands on them.”
“What are you talking about!? You can’t take these three!” the man yelled at the younger man.
“And who the hell says I can’t,” the younger man said, drawing his knife from his back. “You know exactly what kind of deal we have here, so it’s best that you continue to fulfill your end of it.”
“But the lord just dropped them off today and he seemed to be very invested in them,” the man said back to him.
“Gerald, you really must have lost your nerve,” the younger man said, revealing what the older man’s name was.
“I still remember the boss talking about how ruthless you were in the past. He said that you were one of the best men he had in his employ. He almost died laughing when he learned that you had turned over a new leaf. Though he didn’t waste time using his connections to get you this job now, did he?”
“Spare me the pleasantries and tell me why you’re here?” Gerald asked, his demeanor changing from a weak old man to a confident warrior. He actually reminded me a bit of the commander.
“Don’t try to even think about acting tough, we both know that you won’t do anything so long as we have this orphanage under our control. Besides, I never said that the boss wanted to take them now. He is still busy playing with the current toy that you gave him. Perhaps when he is done, this one may come back to you. Though I wouldn’t be so sure about that since he does like breaking the and then tossing them out.”
“Your nothing more than a pig,” Gerald said back to him.
“Says the man that is raising cattle,” the younger man said, taunting him. “All you have to do is do your job and the kids that aren’t chosen get to live. Oh, and don’t forget about the money, since it would seem that you’ve been shorting us enough to throw yourself a fancy party.”
“I haven’t been shorting you at all,” Gerald said. “I’ve been saving what little money I have to buy these kids some better food once in a while. There should be no problem with that.”
“Fair, but what does it really matter, if most of them are just going to end up as the boss’ toys? There is no need for you to even bother. Wouldn’t it be better for you to accept the boss’ goodwill and take a little bit of cash for yourself?” This man was pure scum. He talked as if the other kids here, weren’t even people, but objects instead.
“Using children as bargaining chips is not something that I ever plan to do.” Gerald firmly said to him.
“Well unfortunately for you, your lord knows nothing about this,” the man arrogantly said to Gerald. “I mean, seriously, what kind of person sponsors an orphanage and never bothers to actually check what is going on there and instead just trust the words of someone that is pretending to be an elf.? He is a fool. And thanks to the boss’ plan we finally have three elven girls~.”
I got chills down my body the moment he looked at me. I wanted nothing more than to run away from this place now, but Gerald's grip was too tight.
“I’m certain that the boss would love to have this one, but she’s far too young, he would break her before the fun even begins. Though I’m certain that the other two would last far longer.”
“Don’t,” Gerald said, trying to warn him. “The lord has put these three here himself, and he made it sound like he would return. If he finds out about this, he will kill everyone involved.”
“And that includes you as well, but we’ll be sure to kill all of the kids before he kills all of us. The boss will get what he wants and as always, you’ll deal with the cleanup. If he comes by, just tell him that there was something from their villages that came for them or say that they died of some random illness. Just do what you’ve always done. Nothing more and nothing less.”
“Grrr.” All Gerald could do was growl in response. It must be extremely frustrating for him that there was nothing he could do to protect the other kids, besides sacrificing them.
“Good, I’m glad that we’ve come to an understanding,” the young man said to him. “I have someone come by later to check them out. And I look forward to seeing you get older,” he said looking at me with a perverted gaze before passing by.
“I’m sorry…I’m sorry.” Gerald fell to his knees crying, holding me tightly in his arms. I don’t know how long he’s been forced to do this, but anyone could tell that it was eating away at him. All I could do to comfort him was just be here. Hopefully, the grim fate ahead of us would change.
