-The Next Day-
“A-Alice are you awake?” Syrus asked, nervously making his way back into the nurse's office where Alice was.
“Hmm, Syrus is that you?” Alice asked, once again eating a ton of food made for her by Alexis and Blair. “What happened to your Obelisk Blue Jacket?” she asked, not focusing on being distant from him for the time being since her sister and Blair were here.”
“Alice, I wanted to say that I’m sorry,” Strus said bowing his head to her. “I’ve been nothing but a jerk to you this entire time, trying to find ways for you to go out with me. I got distracted by your cute new form that I forgot that inside you’re still Jaden. I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I just wanted to let you know that I am sorry.”
“Syrus, it’s alright,” Alice said to him as he was trying to leave. “This is kind of my fault as well. I never even thought about how you or the other guys would treat me differently. I should have made things clear that I wasn’t into any of you. I could only ever see you guys as irreplaceable friends. I’m sorry that I accidentally lead any of you into believing that you had a chance with me.”
Alexis, Blair, and the other girls told Alice about what the guys thought about her, and she realized that she was at fault as well. She knew that she had to tell Syrus this if there would be any way to save their friendship.
“So, what happened to you Obelisk Blue Jacket?” Alice asked, hoping that they could just skip past the awkward part, since she did know that Alexis and the others would do their best to keep an eye on him. She noticed that after her change that everyone was a tad bit protective of her.
“I decided to go back to Ra Yellow,” Syrus said back to her. “I don’t deserve it. I decided to work harder until I earn it!”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure that you’ll earn it back soon,” Alice said as Alexis and Blair helped help her into her wheelchair. While her body did feel much better, she still felt incredibly weak. The numbness in her legs was still too severe to allow her to stand, just as Miss Fontaine said they would.
“Don’t cheer for him just yet,” Alexis said to her sister, rolling her out of the nurse's office to get her sister some fresh air. Blair and Syrus followed after them.
“What do you mean?” Alice asked as she finally took a breath of fresh air. It was nice to be out of the infirmary.
“Syrus here hasn’t been doing any survival duels like the rest of us~,” Blair said, as they left the Academy. Though when they did Alice could tell that there was something strange going on. There were many students around them, but not one of them was talking, and there were even several passed out on the ground.
“And why would I!?” Syrus yelled. “Just look at what they’re doing to people! Just look at what they did to Alice and Axel!”
“Have there been any other cases like mine?” Alice asked, concerned about what was going on.
“Luckily no but it could easily happen again,” Alexis said back to her sister.
“Alice! Are you alright!?” Jesse yelled, running straight over to Alice and the others with Hassleberry fast behind him.
“Jesse I’m fine. A bit sore, but fine~,” Alice said reassuring Jesse.
“Sarge, you need to rest!” Hassleberry yelled. “Injured soldiers need to know when to rest and when to fight!”
“It’s alright Hassleberry, I promise that I won’t do anything rash~,” Alice said, hoping that her words got through Hassleberry’s thick skull.
“Fine, but Sarge I’m not going to-ahhhh!”
All of a sudden the crocodile Shirley that was always with Jim Crook attacked Hassleberry!
“Shirley no! Down girl!” Jim yelled, rushing over to stop Shirley, but before he could, she walked right over to Hassleberry and made her way to Alice, nuzzling her nose against Alice’s leg.
“…My word, I have never seen Shirley open up to someone like that before. And sorry mate,” he said, helping Hassleberry to his feet. “She’s normal not this riled up. I think it may have something to do with the powerful electromagnetic waves that are resonating somewhere on the island. These waves cause reptiles to become more hectic and stir up their more aggressive tendencies. Though it would seem that the princess of the Duel Academy has a calming effect on my dear Shirley.”
“No problem,” Alice said, looking down at Shirley, and for some odd reason, she couldn’t help but think that she was cute.
“Strangest thing though, when we arrived on this island these magnetic waves weren’t as powerful, and it would seem that they are increasing by the day,” Jim said, pulling out his electromagnetic wave meter. “And to make it even stranger, she only gets riled up like this when an intense duel is going on. The last one was about two days ago, late at night.
“Wait, but at that time Alice was dueling Axel wasn’t she?” Syrus said to them.
“I think we should follow these waves and see what is going on here,” Jesse said, hoping to figure this out before anyone else got hurt, especially Alice. Alice is temporarily in a wheelchair just after two duels; what would happen to her if she dueled a third time?
“Agreed,” Alice said to Jesse, making Jesse quickly turn away to hide her blushing face. How could Alice be so cute and kind at the same time~!? She was an angel~!
“Alice, are you sure?” Alexis asked her precious sister.
“Don’t worry, I promise that I won’t duel,” Alice said to her sister, knowing what was on her mind. “And besides, being outside is better for my mental health the staying coped up in the dorms for the next few days~.”
“…Fine, but when I say that it’s time to go then it is time to go,” Alexis said firmly as they all followed after Jim who led the way. All through their journey, Shirley was insistent on not leaving Alice’s side. What a cute girl she was~.
“Hey sarge something isn’t right,” Hassleberry said, starting to feel weird. It felt like his mind was being scrambled and his dinosaur DNA activated, and without warning, he jumped straight towards Jim in rage!
THIUD!
“Rrrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!” Hassleberry yelled no longer in control of himself, as Jim pinned him down to the ground.
“Whoa now mate, what’s the matter?” Jim asked the enraged Hassleberry.
“It must be his dinosaur DNA, Syrus said.
“Careful, he’s very aggressive when he gets like this,” Blair said to him.
“I’m pretty sure that we’re past being careful,” Jim said back to her. “There’s only one way to deal with an out-of-control animal, and that’s to prove that you’re stronger! Hassleberry I challenge you to a duel!”
“Rrrrrrgggghhhh!!!!” Hassleberry shoved Jim off of him, grabbing his duel disk, shoving that even in his riled-up state he was still a duelist.
“Perfect!” Jim said, preparing his duel disk as well.
“Jim, what are you doing? Syrus asked him, thinking that this was insane.
“I’m thinking that the electromagnetic waves on this island have something to do with the survival duels as well as the exhaustion that people are experiencing,” Jim said back to Syrus. “All evidence is good evidence, mate.
“Ugh, another duel,” both Blair and Alexis said at the same time, though it would seem that Alice and Jesse were all for watching it unfold. So for her sister’s happiness, Alexis stayed and watched the duel as well, but besides it being an intensive duel, nothing seemed out of place until the duel ended.
The moment that the duel ended Hassleberry’s and Jim Bio-Band’s lit up and without warning both of them collapsed onto the ground! Feeling a sense of panic in the air, Alexis wasted no time calling in the Academy’s medical team. Within minutes they arrived, and they were all taken back to Miss Fontaine who was already taking care of five other students that were experiencing similar conditions to Hassleberry and Jim.
“My heavens, to think that I only just let you out of here,” Miss Fontaine said to Alice.
“We’re sorry for the trouble,” Jesse said to her. “But I think that the course of their condition, as well as the other student's conditions, are because of the Bio-Bands and the Survival Duels. When Hassleberry and Jim were dueling they were fine, but the moment that the duel ended they ended up like this. It’s almost as if they are being drained of their energy. Not only that, but I tried to take my Bio-Band off, and it’s stuck. I tried everything that I could to get it off, but it would seem that the only way for us to get it out would be by cutting off our hands.
“It truly is concerning,” Miss Fontaine said, trying to keep a calm face in front of the students. She had known since the moment that Alice and Jesse got sick that something strange was going on, but she had no way to confirm or prove her suspicions.
“I shall talk to Dr. Crowler and Vice-Chancellor Bonaparte about this. Please stay here and keep an eye on the other students, I won’t be long~,” she said before leaving the nurse's office.
Something had to be done here. It was her job to make sure that the students at the Academy stayed healthy. If Viper’s way of doing things was harming her precious students then she wouldn’t stand down and watch it happen.
“Ah, Dr. Crowler and Vice-Chancellor Bonaparte, I was looking for the both of you,” Miss Fontaine said, seeing them alone together in the hall.
“Miss Fontaine, shouldn’t you be in the nurse's office right now?” Crowler asked her. “I heard that a few more students collapsed again today.”
“That’s why I had to come to you two,” she said back to them. “I think that Viper’s Survival Duels are the cause of these recent events.”
“Hmm, it is true that students only started collapsing like this after the Survival Duels became a thing,” Bonaparte said to her. “But we have no proof of saying if they are the cause or if it is just mere coincidences.
“Please there has to be something that we can do to stop this, before more students get hurt,” Miss Fontaine said, pleading with them.
“I agree,” Crowler said back to her. “It’s our jobs as teachers to make sure that our students become the best duelists that they can be, not to cause them harm. His methods are too crude!”
“If you have a problem with my methods then you should say them to my face,” Viper said, coming out from behind the three of them. “You may think that my methods are crude, but they get results. In a week's time, there will be more and more students benefiting from these duels. Don’t let your own weakness become an obstacle for them. As you said, it’s our job as teachers to make our students the best duelists that they can be~,” he said before walking away.
None of them could see his vision, but it didn’t matter. What he wanted was so much more.
“Fufufu~! I can’t believe how much Duel energy that I have been able to gather so far,” Viper said entering his lab. It has only been a few days since he started, but thanks to duelists like Alice and Jesse he was able to gather much more than he could have predicted. Though he would have to hasten his plan as it would seem that the Academy staff wasn’t as innocent as he was led to believe, and it would seem that there was a rat among the new students that came with him. He would have to deal with him soon.
After the events of today, Alice and the rest of the group were ordered back to their dorms once Miss Fontaine got back. She was frustrated that there was nothing else that she could do for them right now. If things got any more serious they would have to inform the Chancellor.
Syrus went alone back to the Ra dorms and Blair back to Slifer. Alice, Alexis, and Jesse headed back together before splitting up since they lived in separate dorm buildings. Though Jesse didn’t go back to the dorm, instead she went deep into the woods.
“I’m glad you came,” a male voice said, coming from the shadows of the woods.
“It’s exactly as you said,” Jesse said to him. “The Bio-Bands are stealing our energy and making us get sick.
“Juliana Viper has already figured out before your true identity and mine,” the voice said to her. “Luckily he doesn’t know that we are working together or our past together.”
“You… you haven’t told anyone… right?” Juliana asked him.
“Of course not,” the voice said back to her. “I value our friendship far too much to betray you. Though I need to make sure that you will stay on the mission no matter what.”
“Of course, I will. What is this all about?” Juliana asked him. “You sound as if something bad is about to happen.”
“Viper came to me today and gave me an ultimatum,” the voice said to her. “Either I duel within the next week, or I will be expelled.”
“What he can’t do that!” Juliana yelled in anger.
“He can and he will,” the voice said. “But I’m not concerned about the duel, it’s about what happens after the duel. I learned that if the absorption rate on the Bio-Bands is turned up to maximum then then death is possible.”
“N-no… that can’t… he can’t be serious,” Juliana said in disbelief.
“He already knows that I have been snooping around and I know his plan,” he said back to her. “He will try to get rid of me soon. I have a plan to stop this, but I need time. This drive contains everything that I learned about him and what’s he planning,” he said handing her a flash drive. “I’m sorry that I dragged you into this. You shouldn’t have to carry this burden.”
“I would never abandon you,” Juliana said back to him. “It may have been years since they first met, but their friendship would always remain the same.
“Thanks. You need to go now. Viper has eyes everywhere. The longer we are together, the more suspicious he will become about you as well. Oh and before I forget, take this,” he said, handing her a letter. Make sure to invite your princess along. I’ve been dying to meet the one that stole your heart~.
“Ugh, even after 3 years he’s still the same~,” Juliana said, walking back to the dorms, holding the letter in her hands.
