The Duellists (1977) FULL Reaction

Comments

Yes EXACTLY how I felt. I've seen many sword duels and ancient war movies. The one and only time I felt these stakes and that level of grounded realism was in Menelaus vs Paris in Troy. Also, the Duellists is one heck of a first feature as it felt very meticulous

This was a fun watch, thanks for the great reaction. I'm glad you both liked it. I did pick it in part because it is unique and one that not many have reacted to. It's a very underrated film and I appreciate the realism of the fight scenes. Especially that first fight between Feraud and the mayor's nephew. You noticed the contrast between them, Feraud being very confident and the other man visibly afraid for his life. It really feels as if there is something at stake, and that adds a lot of tension to the scenes. I don't feel this same dramatic tension with the overly stylized fights seen in most mainstream cinema. By the way, this was actually Ridley Scott's first feature-length film. He made this a couple of years before Alien.
