FULL WATCHALONG ~ FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009)

Friday the 13th (2009) is Jason doing a greatest-hits speedrun through his own mythology—and it works. The first 20 minutes alone are a masterclass in remixing the entire franchise: you get Friday the 13th Parts 1 through 3 condensed into one brutal, blood-soaked prologue. Mrs. Voorhees loses her head, Jason dons the one-eyed burlap sack, and then stumbles across that now-iconic hockey mask.

From there, the movie reimagines Jason as something new: not just a mindless slasher, but a deranged, territorial survivalist. He’s basically a pot-farming, trophy-collecting, boy scout from hell, stalking his childhood home and guarding Crystal Lake like it’s his kingdom. He’s rigged traps, built an underground tunnel system, and moves with terrifying speed and purpose. Derek Mears plays him with an animal intensity that makes this Jason feel more predator than ghost.

Jared Padalecki leads the cast as the determined brother searching for his missing sister, while Danielle Panabaker brings the grounded energy as the token “final girl.” The rest of the cast is the usual Friday the 13th buffet of horny twenty-somethings with death wish energy—blissfully unaware that Jason is about to rearrange their organs. The kills are creative, mean, and perfectly over-the-top, the way they should be.

But credit where it’s due—this Jason (played by Derek Mears) is a beast. He’s fast, brutal, and genuinely terrifying. The kills are creative and vicious, the pacing is tight, and the cinematography gives it that grimy, high-contrast 2000s horror aesthetic. It’s dumb, sure, but it’s never boring.

What’s wild is how much this movie feels like a love letter to the franchise. You can feel the nods to nearly every entry—the traps, the shrine to Mama Voorhees, even that weird empathy you sometimes get for Jason as the feral kid who never got a chance.

It’s grimy, loud, and unapologetically trashy—but in all the right ways. We both loved it. Tara had an absolute blast with it—she thought it was one of the most fun entries in the series—and Kevin dug the grounded, “Jason as survivalist monster” take. It’s not just a remake; it’s like watching the legend of Crystal Lake reboot itself into a full-on urban legend for the modern era.
