STRANGER THINGS S5E2 YT EDIT

Episode 2 keeps the momentum going, but it also shows some of the seams a bit more than Episode 1. The emotional groundwork is still strong—this season clearly wants to pay off character arcs instead of just throwing monsters at the screen—but you can feel the writers juggling a lot of threads. Sometimes it works beautifully… sometimes it feels like they’re checking boxes to set up later payoffs.

Eleven’s material is solid, even if she’s mostly stuck in “haunted and overwhelmed” mode for now. Will continues to get the best emotional beats, and he actually feels like a main character again instead of psychic wallpaper. Mike’s still figuring himself out, which occasionally slows scenes down, but at least it’s purposeful.

The Hawkins crew gets the most engaging stuff this episode—Dustin, Lucas, and company have that classic Stranger Things chemistry, even when the plot around them gets murky. Hopper and Joyce settle into their parental, war-weary dynamic, though some of their scenes feel a bit like repeat beats from past seasons (“We’ve seen some stuff, kid”).

This episode also drops the first real “what is the Upside Down becoming?” moment, and it’s intriguing—even if the reveal is more setup than payoff. The show’s leaning hard into cosmic-horror imagery, but Episode 2 doesn’t quite let the moment breathe before we’re jumping to the next subplot.

Tonally, Episode 2 is darker and more deliberate. The dread is here, but the pacing occasionally wobbles between intense and meandering. It’s still compelling—this cast can carry almost anything—but it feels like the writers are arranging chess pieces more than delivering fully formed moments.

Still, for a second episode in a final season, it does what it needs to: raises questions, raises stakes, and raises eyebrows. It’s not perfect, but it’s engaging enough to make you lean forward and mutter, “Okay… where are we going with this?”

A solid follow-up, not a showstopper—but the fuse is clearly lit.
