I've made some progress on the characters and monsters. I think I'd rather have monster variants than pose variants. It keeps each enemy iconic. It's best to keep the poses a bit dull an neutral then, so it seems less like they're all doing the same pose. The original HQ poses are not very action'y.
I also think I like the idea of having variants of the same enemy type rather than trying to cover as much of the monster spectrum as possible. The Warhammer Quest expansions introduced a ton of monster and it just feels a bit wrong to have goblins riding wolves inside a dungeon.
I redesigned the slime (no slime in all of warhammer?) to make a little hugging pose. They might be closer to Oozes (DQ bubble slimes). I made them cyclopian. Wanted that eye there for cuteness.
The bugs might turn into some kind of bananahead Xenomorph/Tyranid.
Beastmen and Skaven are fun so I included those. I also like the old hobgoblin design with the lamellar/scale sort of armour so I'm gonna have to draw one of those next.
The Goblin felt like it should be a bit less scary so I gave it a club rather than the scimitar. Unsure about the buckler. Those generally go with nimble stabby weapons.
The guard is an imperial Halberdier, modified. All of these designs modified. The Assassin is based on the Lidda D&D miniature that's actually quite in scale with 28mm heroic. I liked the little crouchy pose, but perhaps it's the odd one out here being from the wrong franchise and more action'y.
I might port the stuff to my own setting – "Skeleton Lords" – ...or not. I'm not really sure where this project is going yet.
